Working nights or rotating shifts? Your body’s natural sleep rhythm is fighting against your schedule, and it can cost you more than sleep.

Shift Work Disorder increases the risk of:
⚠️ Workplace accidents and errors
⚙️ Slower reaction times
🚗 Drowsy driving incidents
🧠 Trouble focusing or staying alert

When your body is exhausted, even simple tasks can become risky. If you’re feeling constantly tired, foggy, or irritable despite getting rest, your sleep schedule might be out of sync with your internal clock.

📍 Talk to our sleep specialists to find out if you’re suffering from Shift Work Disorder and how to take control of your sleep health.

🫁 November is COPD Awareness Month

Did you know that sleep issues are common in people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)?

Poor sleep can make breathing symptoms worse, and nighttime oxygen levels can drop—especially if undiagnosed sleep apnea is also present.

😴 Better sleep can mean better breathing.
Our sleep specialists can help identify whether COPD-related breathing issues or sleep apnea are affecting your rest.

⏰ Don’t Forget to Fall Back!
Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, November 2, which means it’s time to turn your clocks back one hour before bed Saturday night.

While that “extra hour” might sound great, time changes can actually disrupt your sleep schedule, especially if you already struggle with insomnia, sleep apnea, or other sleep disorders.

✅ Stick to your regular bedtime and wake time
💡 Get morning sunlight exposure to help your body adjust
😴 Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime

If your sleep still feels off long after the time change, it could be more than the clock. Our sleep specialists can help you get back on track.

😴 REM Sleep & Alcohol: What You Should Know 🍷

Many people think a nightcap helps them sleep, but alcohol actually disrupts REM sleep, the most restorative stage of rest your brain needs.

💤 What happens:

Alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, but it reduces REM sleep and causes frequent awakenings later in the night.

This leads to lighter, fragmented sleep and grogginess the next day.

Over time, it can increase risks of insomnia, anxiety, and poor concentration.

✨ Better rest tip:
Try winding down with herbal tea, meditation, or reading instead of reaching for a drink before bed.

If restless nights are becoming the norm, our specialists can help uncover what’s really disrupting your sleep.

Our Story

The Sleep Disorder Center of Louisiana is a state-of-the-art sleep center and the only nationally accredited sleep lab in Southwest Louisiana. Established in 2000, the Sleep Disorder Center offers comprehensive services for sleep testing, diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Phillip Conner, board certified sleep specialist, along with Michelle Zimmerman, nurse practitioner, and a staff of certified, registered sleep technicians and office personnel provide personalized care to patients of all ages. We specialize in the diagnosis and management of many sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, shift worker’s sleep disorder, insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness and narcolepsy.

Our sleep center offers the latest technology in detecting sleep disorders. The rooms are designed with all of the comforts of home and studies are completed nightly as well as some during the day. They are conducted by licensed, registered polysomnographic technologists. As you sleep comfortably, your technician will monitor breathing, heart and brain activity, blood oxygen levels and your body movements throughout the night.
