Physical Therapists (PTs) are healthcare professionals who diagnose and treat individuals of all ages, from newborns to the elderly, who have medical problems or other health related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan of care using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. Physical Therapists also work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility by developing fitness and wellness oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles. When people think of Physical Therapy, exercise seems to be the first thing that comes to mind. The Profession of Physical Therapy is so much more than exercise!!

This time of year brings colder weather, dry air, and a wave of seasonal illnesses, and we are seeing the impact it can have on voices every day.

Here is a tip from our speech therapist, Amanda Choates M.S., CCC-SLP.

If you are dealing with a scratchy voice or sore throat, a few small choices can make a big difference. Many cough drops contain menthol. While they feel soothing at first, menthol can actually dry out vocal tissues and prolong irritation. Instead, look for cough drops made with pectin, which help coat and protect the throat.

A physical therapist can help guide you. Source: Systematic review, Spine journal (Brinjikji et al., 2015).

Why It Works Wednesday

Your physical therapist looks at how joints, muscles, and everyday movements may be linked to neck or back pain. This helps guide care based on your symptoms rather than assumptions or generic advice.
✅ Tip: Understanding what aggravates symptoms often helps guide better care.
