Alcohol can raise or lower blood sugar, depending on how much you drink and whether you eat. If you drink, do so in moderation—up to one drink a day for women, two for men—always with food, and count the calories. Be aware that alcohol can cause low blood sugar later, especially if you use insulin.

💊 If you have diabetes along with risks like high blood pressure or smoking, your doctor may suggest a daily low-dose aspirin to lower your chance of heart attack or stroke. If you don’t have these risks, aspirin’s bleeding side effects may outweigh the benefits. Ask your doctor if daily aspirin is right for you and what dose to take.

🦶 High blood sugar can damage nerves and reduce circulation in your feet, causing pain, tingling, or numbness. Even small cuts can turn into serious infections.

To protect your feet:
• Wash daily with lukewarm water and dry well, especially between toes.
• Moisturize, but avoid creams between toes to prevent infection.
• Check your feet daily for sores, redness, blisters, or swelling.
• Never go barefoot.

See your doctor if a sore doesn't heal in a few days, or immediately if you notice an open ulcer.

Diabetes raises your risk for certain infections, but vaccines can help protect you. Talk to your provider about:
• Flu shot – get it every year.
• Pneumonia vaccine – may need just one dose, with a booster if you're 65+ or have complications.
• Hepatitis B – recommended if you're under 60 and haven't been vaccinated; ask your provider if you're 60+.
• Tetanus and others – stay current with tetanus (every 10 years) and any additional vaccines your doctor suggests.

👩‍⚕️ Plan for 2–4 diabetes checkups a year, plus an annual physical and eye exam.

At your physical, your provider will review your diet and activity, check for complications like kidney, nerve, or heart issues, and examine your feet. Your eye doctor will screen for retinal damage, cataracts, and glaucoma.

👇 High blood pressure and high cholesterol can damage your blood vessels, especially if you have diabetes. Together, they greatly increase your risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious conditions.

A healthy, low-fat, low-sodium diet, regular exercise, and limiting alcohol can help—and your provider may also recommend medication if needed.

🙅 Avoid smoking or quit smoking if you smoke. Smoking increases your risk of type 2 diabetes and the risk of various diabetes complications, including:

• Reduced blood flow in the legs and feet, which can lead to infections, nonhealing ulcers and possible amputation
• Worse blood sugar control
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Eye disease, which can lead to blindness
• Nerve damage
• Kidney disease
• Premature death

Talk to your health care provider about ways to help you stop smoking or using other types of to***co.
