Autism Services of SWLA Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana is a nonprofit organization founded by family members touched by autism.

We provide housing and support for adults and operate four houses in which men and women live and thrive in our local community. Adults with autism need a safe, comfortable environment in which to live, with twenty four hour care. Since there were no homes specifically designed for persons with autism in Louisiana, family members organized ASSL to provide such services. ASSL was founded in 2003 and after a few years of hard work and variety of generous volunteer hours and donations, ASSL's first home opened its doors in 2009.

Our partner Medicaid Waiver provider agency, Direct Care Inc., is looking for caregivers for older adolescent and young adult males and females who are on the autism spectrum. Job duties could include after school help with homework, transport to local outings and activities, and assistance with basic life skills such as hygiene, laundry, and housekeeping. Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana and Direct Care Inc. Appoint Executive Director

The Board of Directors of Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana and Direct Care, Inc. is pleased to announce Aaron S. Ortego as Executive Director, effective February 15, 2021. “We are excited Mr. Ortego has joined our effort to serve clients and families in the community and throughout the region”, said Julia Babineaux, president of the board of directors. “He brings a wealth of experience to our dedicated team and we look forward to working with him.”

Mr. Ortego is a graduate of McNeese State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing​. ​Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, but has spent most of his life since elementary school here in Southwest Louisiana and is a Sulphur High School graduate. He has spent the last eleven years working in the healthcare industry. ​Aaron has extensive background in Nursing and Business Administration, as he has worked as a Corporate Director of Nursing for a large “Skilled Nursing” company, was an
Administrative Director of Nursing for Lake Charles Memorial Hospital/Archer Institute, and most recently the Director of Nursing for Regency Healthcare in Beaumont​. Aaron has a passion for providing tools and systems to positively impact as many lives as possible. Daily improvement within every system and the constant pursuit of providing the highest quality of care and services will always be his mantra. Aaron’s wife is Michelle Ortego, who is a school teacher at Gillis Elementary School. Together they have two children, Kierston Ortego (11) and Drayton Ortego (6). Aaron and his family reside in Westlake and are so excited to continue to serve this wonderful community, as they remain steadfast on growth to reach new areas and more lives.

Aaron and his family serve in their church and have been involved with many volunteer projects and charity events around Southwest Louisiana. Aaron has also played very large roles in the Long-term Care and Behavioral Health industries, both professionally and voluntarily.

Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana is a non-profit organization that provides housing and support to adult individuals with autism. Direct Care Inc. is a non-profit agency providing personal care services for persons of all ages within the autism spectrum and with other developmental disabilities.

Our Story

Adults with autism need a safe, supportive environment in which to live, and caregivers who are trained to manage the unique communication, behavioral, and related needs associated with life on the spectrum. Our founders organized Autism Services of Southwest Louisiana in 2003 to provide housing and supports exclusively for men and women impacted by autism. Our first home opened in 2009. Thanks to the generous support and sacrifices of our friends, donors, and volunteers, we now operate four homes in Southwest Louisiana. In collaboration with our partner non-profit organization, Direct Care Inc., we are making a positive impact on children, adolescents, adults, and families touched by autism throughout Southwest Louisiana and beyond.
