The History of Maui Jim Sunglasses

Maui Jim is a brand of sunglasses founded in Maui, Hawaii. The company started in 1980 when a fisherman began selling sunglasses on pool decks of West Maui resorts. Within a few years, Maui Jim became Hawaii’s best-selling premium sunglass brand. Today, the company has become a global leader in polarized sunglasses.
The company’s breakthrough came in 1983 when it launched the world’s first pair of PolarizedPlus® sunglasses. These patented lenses eliminate glare and UV rays while enhancing color and clarity. The success of the PolarizedPlus® lenses led Maui Jim to develop a full line of polarized sunglasses for both men and women.

Maui Jim’s Growth Around the World
In the late 80s, Maui Jim expanded beyond Hawaii for the first time when RLI became the thriving company’s patent owner and mainland distributor. This expansion was the launching point of Maui Jim’s global success.

In 2022 Maui Jim became part of Kering Eyewear, a luxury eyewear company, and continues its expansion into new markets all over the world.

The history of eyeglasses includes many key moments, from the invention of the first lenses to the introduction of plastic lenses in the 1980s:
13th century
Italian monks created the first shaped lenses from beryl quartz, which were used for reading. The first eyeglasses were invented in Northern Italy, and were made of two lenses riveted together at the ends. They were placed on the nose and held in place by clamping the nose between the rims.
15th century
Eyeglasses became more popular, especially after the publication of the first newspaper, The London Press. They became a status symbol of wealth and intelligence.
1600s
Spanish craftsmen invented the first frame temples, which were attached to the frame with silk ribbons or strings that looped over the ears.
1727
British optician Edward Scarlett invented the modern style of eyeglasses frame, which could be placed over the ears and nose.
1827
English astronomer and mathematician Sir George Biddle Airy invented glasses to correct astigmatism.
1980s
Plastic lenses were introduced as a more durable alternative to glass lenses.
20th century
Eyeglasses became a fashion accessory, and various styles have come in and out of popularity.

The Creation of Bifocal Lenses
As the strength of the lenses and focusing power evolved, so did the need for advanced eyeglass options. In 1784, Benjamin Franklin invented the first pair of bifocals in 1784 by gluing two optical lenses together. As you can see, bifocals are glasses that offer two optical powers in one lens. The fused bifocal we know today was later created in the early 1900s, enabling wearers to have a seamless fuse between lenses.
