What is clinical research? Clinical research is a way to find answers to health questions and concerns. A doctor and researcher will work together with a patient, having constant direct interaction. They will study this patient to find new and better ways to treat, control, identify and understand an illness. Who can participate in a clinical research study? Every study has criteria, or guidelines, that determines who can participate. These guidelines are called inclusion/exclusion criteria. Inclusion/exclusion is based on factors such as age, type of illness, medical history as well as current and past medication. These guidelines are used to identify appropriate participants that will be able to answer the questions being asked in the study as well as keep the patient safe. What are my risks and benefits? -You will receive medical care -You will take an active role in your own health -You will learn more about your disease -You will gain access to new treatments -There may be side effects as well as adverse reactions -The treatment may not be right for you -You will be donating your own time for the study -You will be helping others with similar conditions and contributing to health research.
