In honor of June being National Infertility Awareness month, we wanted to take the time to answer some of the most commonly asked questions on the topic.
Q: What is infertility?
A: It’s a disease of the reproductive system that prevents pregnancy after 12 months of unprotected s*x (or 6 months if you’re 35+).
Q: How common is it?
A: Infertility affects 10–15% of couples. You are not alone in this.
Q: What affects fertility in women?
A: Age matters. In your 20s/early 30s, there’s a 25–30% chance of conceiving each month. By 40, it drops to 10% or less. Other factors include ovulation disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, uterine conditions, and fibroids.
Q: When should I seek help?
A: If you’ve been trying for 12 months (or 6 months if you’re 35+), it’s time to talk to a reproductive endocrinologist. You deserve answers and support.
Q: Is it my fault?
A: Absolutely not. Infertility is a medical condition, just like diabetes or any other health issue. It does not define your worth.
Q: How might infertility affect my mental health?
A: It can bring anxiety, grief, isolation, and stress. It’s one of life’s hardest experiences for many women, and it’s okay to feel everything you’re feeling.
