Happy Women's History Month! 😷

Mary Edwards Walker, the only woman in U.S. history to receive the Medal of Honor, was a pioneering surgeon, women’s rights advocate, and abolitionist.

Despite many societal barriers, she became the first female U.S. Army surgeon during the Civil War and would often cross battle lines to treat wounded soldiers. This resulted in her capture by Confederate soldiers. She was declared a spy and imprisoned for 4 months. Shortly after her release from prison, she was declared the Assistant Surgeon of the Ohio 52nd Infantry.

Beyond her work in the Civil War, she was an advocate for women’s rights. She famously wore pants and advocated for “dress reform.” She never conformed to traditional gender roles, wearing men’s clothing for comfort and practicality, including a signature top hat. When she died in 1919, she was buried in a black suit.

As we start the second half of the year I'd like to take the opportunity to thank the 90+ CO/WY members for joining us at the 54th National AST conference!
A big congratulations to our Secretary Julie Beard for receiving her FAST, and Treasurer Antoinette Trujillo for being appointed to the National Education Board!
This board continues to progress in Leap and bounds! We even grew our membership 11.8% in 2023!!
Our agenda is finalized for the Sept 7th zoom meeting and we are confirming the last few spots for Oct 26th in person business meeting.
