There are no words that can describe the last 48 hours for our family.
We were a part of the historic tornado touchdown in Nebraska Friday. And I hope that is the worst thing I ever have to live through.
In 20 seconds flat, it went from sunny and questionable, to full blown destruction.
While the wreckage and loss of our home is difficult to bear, it is with such heartbreak to share the passing of my beloved friend Onyx. Something I’m still having trouble processing.
There are not many horses that get to wear the hat of friend, business partner, mentor, teacher, joy giver the list is endless.
Yesterday I began to count the number of kids and families we got to meet along the way when I started giving lessons at 16. She was only 3 then. And died at 18 yesterday, with a rough estimate of helping teach over 200 kids the joys and challenges of the equine sport. We’ve been together so long I’m having trouble defining who I am without her.
Her quirks were endless. She was the kindest and had the most sassy personality, you had better bring an apple for her pet tax! She knew how to make you laugh and then cuss in the next beat. My favorite quality of hers?
She made you work for it. She taught myself and countless others the value of failure. Of walking by faith. Of trying again and again, to be a problem solver. She gave so many including myself the chance to go to the winners circle.
She never lost a halter class and was a wiz in the showmanship ring, even after 4 years taking off to finish my graduate degree she and I won horsemanship classes and had a blast in the process.
If you’ve made it this far. Please I invite you to post any memories or funny pictures of the sweet late onyx in the comments. Ive really appreciated everyone reaching out. But would really love to create a digital memory of her for all of us to look at, especially me.
To remember the one who gave us wings 🪽
