Mary's Woods residents are passionate about giving back to their community, on or off campus. 🩷
The Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce would like to extend our warmest regards to the family and friends of Shirley Faris, and thank all who have made donations to the Village Flower Basket program in her memory.
Over the past few weeks I've had the privilege to meet and talk with a number of Shirley's friends and neighbors. They describe her as as a fun and caring person who loved being with people ("she had a million best friends"). They say she possessed a beautiful ability to listen and somehow knew just the right time to inject levity when a conversation needed lightening up. She also wasn't afraid to speak her mind, and occasionally delivered a "real zinger."
Shirley was a driving force at Mary's Woods and enjoyed being active - her floor at Pepin was known as the "Movers & Shakers." Before she passed, she asked that donations in her memory be directed to the Village Flower Basket program. I was recently invited to join her neighbors at their weekly get-together, and share more about this 36-year-old tradition.
From May - October, over 200 flower baskets are hung along the main throughfares of Lake Oswego, funded by donors like you. Each basket costs apx. $400 to grow, hang, water and feed through the summer. The Lake Oswego Chamber Foundation collects tax-deductible donations year-round to ensure that both residents and visitors get to enjoy this beauty year after year.
If you, like Shirley, enjoy seeing the return of the flower baskets each year, you can make your donation online (https://www.lochamberfoundation.com/flowers/donate), or mail a check to LO Chamber Foundation, PO Box 368, Lake Oswego, OR 97034. If you'd like to make your donation in honor or memory of someone, let us know and we will include that in our Honor Roll of Donors, published in the Lake Oswego Review at the end of the year.
Thank you again to Shirley's friends and family. I will order a Chocolate Martini in her memory soon, and you will all be on my mind through the summer as we watch the flower baskets thrive.
Cheers! Jen P. (Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce)
