Even though vision problems can co-occur alongside dyslexia, dyslexia itself is NOT a vision problem.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin and primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.
It involves difficulty in reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding).
Dyslexia is characterised by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities.
These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities.
So despite what many people believe, dyslexia is a result of individual differences in areas of the brain that process language and NOT a vision problem.

So so thankful that we found Purple Peg 8 years ago! When our youngest was in Kindergarten and 1st grade, we knew something wasn’t right with his reading. Frustration was starting to develop and even though “he seemed to be doing ok in school” something was off. Many, many tears and prayers later we found Purple Peg and the explicit reading instruction that a dyslexic learner needs. A special shoutout to Kim Thompson Stuckey, Deb Gaghyan Braman, and Joan Peetz for their impact on our son. Fast forward to 2020 and the start of my professional journey with helping struggling learners and the launch of my business Invincible Insights Therapy in 2023. ❤️📝📚
