After falling and breaking her left hip, 85-year-old Marion Schwentker underwent a hip replacement. She seemed to be recovering well until she began to experience unexpected pain. X-rays showed that Marion’s new hip was not positioned correctly, which caused a failure of the hip’s mechanics. She would need to undergo another hip replacement – her second one in less than five months. Fortunately, Marion knew exactly where she wanted to go for inpatient rehabilitation: SSM Health Rehabilitation Hospital — Lake St. Louis. Having previously been a patient at the hospital, she was confident they’d help her get back on her feet.

Duo Dog Kia served as a great motivator for this patient. Kia was incorporated in her therapy sessions in several ways, including leading the way while she practiced walking with an overground body weight support system. This system allows patients to re-learn to walk safely. Kia also happily jumped in the car simulator with the patient during family training. That’s our Kia – always willing to lend a paw.

After experiencing a stroke, many patients struggle with spatial neglect. This is a condition occurs when a stroke survivor loses awareness of one side of their body. The person can typically see and move that side but doesn't pay attention to it. Placing Kia on a patient’s affected side is a great way to improve their attention and awareness on their neglected side. Kia is happy to accept a treat from this patient, knowing that he is also helping with their recovery.

With focus and a little motivation from Duo Dog Kia, this patient worked on improving his fine motor skills by placing treats in a special dog toy. Kia patiently waited for his cue, then happily retrieved it, while the patient focused on improving balance and standing tolerance. Talk about a win-win!

Rex Pratt wasn’t too worried when he learned he needed surgery for a torn rotator cuff in his shoulder. The active 86-year-old made it through the procedure with flying colors, but then developed an infection that required additional surgery and treatment. After a month in the hospital, Rex was weak, struggling to walk, keep his balance and personal care tasks. With goals of getting back on his bike, Rex pursued rehabilitative care at SSM Health Rehabilitation Hospital – Bridgeton with a focus on improving his mobility and function every day.

Healing takes time, patience, determination and, sometimes, the support of a furry friend. With compassion and intuition, Duo Dog Kia knew how to help this patient during therapy by gently placing his chin on his knee as a reminder to keep his leg straight. The patient also practiced reaching with his injured arm in order to pet Kia.

To kick off the official start of summer, Duo Dog Kia recently helped patients celebrate at SSM Health Rehabilitation Hospital – Bridgeton’s ‘Summer Shenanigans.’ The festivities included outdoor games, music, frozen treats, prizes and a photo booth.

Working with Duo Dog Kia quickly became the highlight of this patient’s occupational therapy session. After working on several fine motor coordination activities with the help of Kia, the patient finished their session with Kia’s favorite game. After placing cones on the floor, the patient then placed a small treat inside for Kia to find. That’s what we call a win for all involved!

The new SSM Health Neuro Transitional Center (NTC) in O’Fallon, Missouri welcomed its first patient on Monday, June 2.

Following a stroke, patient Tom Glick is continuing his recovery and rehabilitation at the NTC. To mark the occasion, he and his family cut a ribbon as he passed through the doors for the first time.

The NTC offers compassionate, expert care in an environment that fosters healing and restores independence for every patient.

You may have heard the words “aphasia” and “dysphagia” when supporting a loved one’s health journey and wondered what they mean and how they differ.

June is National Aphasia Awareness Month—a fitting time to highlight this communication disorder and contrast it with dysphagia, another disorder patients may face after injury or illness.

Aphasia affects a person’s ability to speak, read or write—although not necessarily their thinking. After a stroke or brain injury that damages the language centers in the brain, a patient may have trouble finding the right words, understanding what others say or comprehending text.

Dysphagia is the difficulty in swallowing, and can occur as a symptom of many different conditions, including brain and muscle disorders.

Stroke recovery goals can look very different for each stroke survivor. Some simply want to stand or eat on their own. Others envision returning to work, travelling the world or reclaiming the role of family event planner. The most common goal among patients? Returning home. Select Medical’s nationwide network of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals focuses on helping patients do just that.

Clark Crist once helped MLB players like Kenny Lofton (Cleveland Guardians), Mike Leake (Seattle Mariners) and Albert Pujols (St. Louis Cardinals) sign their contracts. Then suddenly the former player, manager and Major League scout needed help himself. He suffered a massive stroke, which affected his ability to walk, feed and dress himself.

In addition to friends and former teammates like Terry Francona (The University of Arizona, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox), Barry Larkin (Cincinnati Reds) and Luis Gonzalez (Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros), Clark needed a coach. Instead he found a team. The therapists at HonorHealth Rehabilitation Hospital helped Clark come home again.

Many of our patients struggle to speak, swallow or think clearly when they transition to our care. They’re recovering from injury or illness and want to talk with a loved one, eat their favorite food and manage their daily activities.

Certified speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in making that happen. As part of a multi-disciplinary care team, SLPs diagnose communication and swallowing conditions and create individualized plans to address them.

For some patients, that may mean exercises to strengthen their tongue, lips and throat. For others, it might be activities to improve memory and problem solving—all with the goal of getting them back to their lives.

Caleb Utley, a 34-year-old restaurant server, enjoyed an active life with his fiancé and their two dogs. But a catastrophic vehicle accident changed everything. The incident left him with multiple traumatic wounds including a brain injury. He faced a long road to recovery. His first stop after the ICU was Select Specialty Hospital - Dallas Plano, a critical illness recovery hospital, where he continued to heal from his injuries. After meeting his goals, he transferred to Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation - Frisco, to regain his mobility, communication skills and other abilities to return to the life he loved.

“How do I bring my loved one home from the hospital? I don’t feel ready.”

We often hear these words from caregivers prior to a patient’s discharge; the end of a hospital stay can be confusing, overwhelming and even, a little scary. That’s why we have a Care Partner Program.

CHET—Community, Healing, Education and Training—is an online destination built to support all our patients and their caregivers nationwide during their recovery journey. Hospital staff support and teach caregivers all aspects of care, based on the specific needs of each patient and their family.

During care partner training sessions, each caregiver has the opportunity to participate in physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapy.
