This week in our Healing Through Their Minds series, we’re reflecting on Lucy Whitmore from 50 First Dates.

Lucy’s story raises a powerful question about worth. When she realizes the impact of her memory loss on the people around her, she pulls back, believing distance is the most loving choice. Sometimes we convince ourselves that protecting others means shrinking ourselves.

Her journey reminds us that fearing we are “too much” or “not enough” can lead us to isolate. But real connection is not built on perfection. It is built on consent, patience, and the choice to stay.

Healing can begin when we stop deciding for others that we are a burden, and allow ourselves to be loved as we are.

Sometimes what feels overwhelming in the moment is actually a cognitive distortion called catastrophizing. Catastrophizing happens when our mind automatically jumps to the worst possible outcome and treats it as fact.

It is a common anxiety response, especially when we care deeply about the situation. The goal is not to eliminate anxious thoughts, but to pause and ask questions like: What evidence do I have? What is the most likely outcome? Is there another explanation?

At Foster Counseling & Therapy, we can help you identify unhelpful thought patterns and develop tools to respond with greater clarity, balance, and confidence.

Starting therapy is a brave first step, but it does not mean your thoughts suddenly go quiet. For many people, intrusive thoughts can still show up even while they are actively working on growth.

Progress is not about never having difficult thoughts. It is about learning how to respond to them differently. Healing takes time and every step forward still counts.

Sometimes the “no” you didn’t want is actually protection in disguise.

A closed door can create space to reflect, redirect, and realign with what truly fits your growth. What feels like rejection today may be preparation for something healthier tomorrow.

If you’re facing a closed door right now, what might it be teaching you? 💛

This week in our Healing Through Their Minds series, we’re reflecting on Jim Halpert from the television series The Office.

Jim is easygoing, funny, and charming, but humor often becomes his shield. It is easier to joke, deflect, or stay comfortable than to name what he truly wants. For a long time, he settles for what feels safe instead of what feels meaningful.

Jim’s story highlights how comfort can quietly turn into avoidance. Growth begins when he risks honesty, steps into discomfort, and allows himself to pursue something more aligned with who he is becoming.

Sometimes healing looks like outgrowing the version of life that once felt “good enough.”

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer someone isn’t advice — it’s presence.

A listening ear.
A little patience.
A reminder that they matter.

What’s one small way you’ve felt cared for lately? ⬇️
Or… what’s something you wish people understood about you right now?

Let’s create more of that for each other. 💛
