Whether it's preschool, fifth grade, middle school, high school, or gulp, college...You've been the backbone to their journey, parents, congratulations on this milestone!

There is a term in Japanese - Mono no aware (物の哀れ) that describes an awareness of the impermanence of all things with an appreciation and wistful feelings encompassing the mindful recognition of time passing....this, in me, is the passing of time in motherhood.

For all of you who are feeling this "mono no aware," you are not alone.

Happy Mother's Day. Sad Mother’s Day. Complicated Mother’s Day. Not Sure Mother’s Day. Hard Mother’s Day.

However Mother’s Day is for you…

I know that for a lot of the people reading this, today is... a lot.

Maybe your child forgot. Or remembered but couldn't hold it together long enough for it to feel good. Maybe the morning started with a meltdown, or silence, or something was said that stung in a way you didn't expect and couldn't shake.

Maybe you've been mothering with everything you have for years…quietly, fiercely, without a lot of acknowledgment. And today just highlights how invisible that can feel.

Maybe you're thinking about your own mom today. Missing her. Or grieving a relationship with her that was never quite what you needed it to be. Or both, somehow, at the same time.

Maybe you became a mother in a way that involved loss. Or you're mothering children who carry so much loss themselves that holidays like this one land like a reminder of everything that's been hard.

I see you. All of that is real. All of it belongs today.

Motherhood might not look for you like the brunch and the flowers and the handmade cards. It looks like showing up on the hardest days. It looks like regulating yourself so you can be present for someone who is absolutely falling apart. It looks like loving fiercely and being met with a door slam. It looks like choosing, again and again, to stay curious instead of reactive… even when you're exhausted and no one is clapping for you.

That is extraordinary. You are extraordinary.

And the fact that today might not feel like a celebration doesn't mean you haven't earned one.
