Hi All.

May is Mental Health awareness month. With that being said, if you or a family member or friend, are in the field to find a licensed counselor, a trusted ally of mine is currently doing free counseling sessions. FREE. There is no catch. Let’s normalize getting help when help is needed. These will be online, secure and confidential, with a professional licensed counselor. If interested; reach out to me and I can provide the contact information. Thank you.

Fish Friday: Wayne Becker of Giddings fishes from the bulkhead at Roberts Point Park on Saturday, May 17. He was taking part in the annual Anglers on Wheels tournament. The Island Queen II, the boat the tournament uses, had mechanical problems, so the anglers did not go out. Barbara Blair, event organizer, said the participants went to the park to fish from the bulkheads instead. She said the group had a good time and caught some nice fish. This photo ran in the May 22 edition of the South Jetty newspaper. The South Jetty provides coverage of the local fishing scene and lots of other Port Aransas community issues every week. The paper is available at stores all over town and can be found online at www.portasouthjetty.com.

With times, come change, and in the world of disability, learning to adapt and conquer is not new to us. This year’s Anglers on Wheels fishing tournament will be slightly, ok… maybe largely different. This year the Island Queen II, is dry docked pending its annual Coast Guard Approval, so the owners have offered us, The Mustang to go out on for our adaptive fishing trips. We are so grateful for this offer, and are gladly adjusting our tournament to accommodate as many disabled fisherman a their family’s as possible.

We will host 3 days of fishing this year, each trip will be 4 hours long, the Mustang is a smaller boat, so we will only take our 30 people per trip, and all 3 trips will be in the mornings.
Friday Morning May 18th 8a-12p
Saturday Morning May 19th 8a-12p
Sunday Morning May
20th 8a-12p
We will still hold our BBQ on Saturday; but it will be 1p-4p

We are still determining if there will be a Silent Auction, and if Half Price Books will make a donation. So that is TBA. But we will have a great lunch Catered by Munchies It’s All Good #1 Chef Owner Alfredo Contreras.

Each disabled guest may bring 2 people max with them, at a $10 per guest fee, which must be paid at the time the reservation is made. This fee is non refundable, and will be considered a donation the our organization if you are unable to attend. Please make the payment and reservation below. We are trying hard to accommodate as many disabled guest as possible. I look forward to seeing each of y’all.

Now for the PRIZE money; because it being a 3 day competition, we will announce the winners on our Website and page, and will mail out the checks; so please make sure we have your current and correct address on file.

I anticipate spaces filling up fast; so please sign up for 1 day, if I have opening, I will reach out to the anglers who would like to go on multiple trips. Thank you.

Heather

Our Story

The Door In The Wall story started in September 1994 with the Blair family. We have two daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer. Jennifer became ill when she was 2 months old with spinal meningitis. Both my husband and I were working. Jim and his dad owned Blair’s Body & Paint Works and I worked for a practice of cardiac surgeons. I decided to take care of Jenny’s therapy myself because it took a lot of time and attention. I had to quit my job. It was difficult financially but we got by. As the years past, we discovered that there wasn’t much for a child with a disability to do for fun. (There’s a lot more now) We had the opportunity to host a fishing trip in Port Aransas because the owners of The Island Queen Charter Boat offered their boat (which happened to be a converted ferry boat so it was flat and wheelchair accessible) for a fishing trip in May. We also wanted to share the information we came across with other families that were also raising a child with a disability. So, we started The Door In The Wall, Inc. In 2005, my husband and my dad passed away. The future of our program was on my shoulders. I soon found out that I had many wonderful friends and sponsors that were right there with me, making sure every event would go off without a hitch. In 2011, I met Ralph Kessler at the May fishing trip. We found out part of his family lived in my neighborhood and that our families crossed paths many years ago. Small world isn’t it? Ralph was a tremendous help and came on board with fresh ideas. At that point he created the eBay Store that currently helps us fund our events. Why are we hosting these events every year? Because great things happen when people get together. The small child with a disability sees older participants having fun fishing. They see that they can have a future that is full of possibilities. Anglers On Wheels lets them go fishing on a boat, see the dolphins, feed the pelicans and listen to the sounds of the ocean. Those are all worthwhile things in my book! Ralph and I hope you will visit our website and the store. Please tell your friend about us. ditwtexas.org and ditwtexas.webstoreplace.com
