The Door In The Wall story started in September 1994 with the Blair family. We have two daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer. Jennifer became ill when she was 2 months old with spinal meningitis. Both my husband and I were working. Jim and his dad owned Blair’s Body & Paint Works and I worked for a practice of cardiac surgeons. I decided to take care of Jenny’s therapy myself because it took a lot of time and attention. I had to quit my job. It was difficult financially but we got by. As the years past, we discovered that there wasn’t much for a child with a disability to do for fun. (There’s a lot more now) We had the opportunity to host a fishing trip in Port Aransas because the owners of The Island Queen Charter Boat offered their boat (which happened to be a converted ferry boat so it was flat and wheelchair accessible) for a fishing trip in May. We also wanted to share the information we came across with other families that were also raising a child with a disability. So, we started The Door In The Wall, Inc. In 2005, my husband and my dad passed away. The future of our program was on my shoulders. I soon found out that I had many wonderful friends and sponsors that were right there with me, making sure every event would go off without a hitch. In 2011, I met Ralph Kessler at the May fishing trip. We found out part of his family lived in my neighborhood and that our families crossed paths many years ago. Small world isn’t it? Ralph was a tremendous help and came on board with fresh ideas. At that point he created the eBay Store that currently helps us fund our events. Why are we hosting these events every year? Because great things happen when people get together. The small child with a disability sees older participants having fun fishing. They see that they can have a future that is full of possibilities. Anglers On Wheels lets them go fishing on a boat, see the dolphins, feed the pelicans and listen to the sounds of the ocean. Those are all worthwhile things in my book! Ralph and I hope you will visit our website and the store. Please tell your friend about us. ditwtexas.org and ditwtexas.webstoreplace.com
