🦠 Flu Season, Missed School & ABA Therapy 🧩
Flu season can disrupt routines for children with autism, especially when school or therapy sessions are missed. While rest always comes first, progress does not have to stop.
Using simple ABA therapy strategies at home can help your child stay regulated and maintain skills during sick days.
1. Keep Expectations Simple and Flexible
During illness, reduce demands while keeping small routines in place. ABA therapy emphasizes meeting the child where they are and adjusting expectations without removing structure completely.
2. Use Visual Schedules for Sick Days
A modified visual schedule that includes rest, quiet play, snacks, and comfort activities helps children understand what to expect, even when school is missed.
3. Reinforce Small Wins
Positive reinforcement remains key. Praising calm behavior, communication attempts, or cooperation with rest supports emotional regulation and confidence.
4. Practice Maintenance Skills
Focus on already-learned skills rather than introducing new ones. Simple goals like requesting help, following one-step directions, or independent play can be maintained without overwhelming your child.
5. Prepare for the Return to School
As your child starts feeling better, gradually reintroduce parts of the school routine. This might include earlier bedtimes, wearing school clothes, or reviewing social stories about going back to class.
At ABLE, we support families with ABA therapy in Plant City, Tampa, Lakeland, Brandon, and Clearwater, offering guidance even when life throws curveballs.
💙 Consistency, compassion, and support make all the difference.
