Yes. In fact, our technologists are experienced in performing 3D mammography on patients with implants.

Breast implants can impact the accuracy of a mammogram because both silicone and saline implants are not transparent to X-rays and can obscure tissues behind them. If you have had implants, please let us know—our technologists and radiologists can use special techniques to improve image quality without rupturing the implant during breast compression.

You may also be advised to have a supplemental screening test (such as breast MRI) if you have implants.

While a 3D mammogram (also known as digital breast tomosynthesis) isn't necessarily more comfortable than a traditional 2D mammogram in terms of breast compression, some patients report that the experience feels slightly better because the machine may move more smoothly and take images more quickly. The biggest benefit, though, is in accuracy:

-3D mammograms provide clearer images, especially for women with dense breast tissue.
-They result in fewer call-backs for additional testing, which can reduce anxiety and discomfort in the long run.

So while the physical comfort may be about the same, the improved clarity and reduced need for retakes can make the overall experience feel better and more reassuring.

Breast tissue is made up of glandular tissue, fibrous (connective) tissue and fat. Dense breast tissue has larger amounts of glandular and fibrous tissue and lower amounts of fatty tissue.

“The only way to determine if you have dense breast tissue is by getting a mammogram,” said Cynthia Litwer, MD, chief of breast imaging at Cedars-Sinai. Automated whole breast ultrasound (ABUS) is safe, effective and inexpensive. For women with dense breasts, it can help detect more cancers— and smaller cancers— than mammography alone.

More than 10 million Americans are affected by Osteoporosis, which occurs when a person’s body does not properly replenish the components of their bone tissue.
Women are at higher risk for the disease, but men can develop it, too. According to the U.S.-based Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation, up to half of all women age 50 and older will break a bone due to osteoporosis, and as many as a quarter of men age 50 and older will do the same.

This disease is also known as the "silent disease", because we can't feel our bones getting weaker, and often don't know that Osteoporosis has developed until a bone is broken.

Women of all ages should perform a breast self-exam once a month:

Menstruating women
Post-menopausal women

Note: Self-exams do not replace other screening methods. Some cancers are too small to detect by touch. Always combine self-exams with:
✔ Regular check-ups with a doctor
✔ Mammography
✔ Ultrasound or MRI when needed

Prioritize your health—early detection saves lives!

Regular screenings, including mammograms, can help detect breast cancer at an early stage when treatment is most effective. Women over 40 should talk to their doctor about when to start annual screenings, and those with a family history may need them even earlier.

Ways to lower your risk:

Maintain a healthy weight and stay active
Limit alcohol and avoid smoking
Be aware of any changes in your breasts and report them to your doctor
Know your family history and discuss genetic testing if needed
Prevention and early detection save lives. Take charge of your health and encourage others to do the same.
