Halotherapy is an alternative treatment that involves breathing salty air. Some claim that it can treat respiratory conditions, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and allergies. Others suggest it can also:

ease smoking-related symptoms, such as a cough, shortness of breath, and wheezing, treat depression and anxiety, cure some skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne.

The origins of halotherapy date back to the medieval era. But researchers only recently started studying its potential benefits.

A device called a halogenerator grinds salt into microscopic particles and releases them into the air of the room. Once inhaled, these salt particles are claimed to absorb irritants, including allergens and toxins, from the respiratory system. Advocates say this process breaks up mucus and reduces inflammation, resulting in clear airways.

The salt particles are said to have a similar effect on your skin by absorbing bacteria and other impurities responsible for many skin conditions.

Let's face it... most of us hate the idea of putting medicine, a man-made chemical substance, into our bodies. Plus the fact that medicine costs money. And when you have a chronic illness like allergies and/or asthma, having to take medicine for the rest of your life can definitely be a burden, at least on some level.

But we also like to feel good and be able to carry on with our day to day lives, don't we? So not doing anything to manage our allergy symptoms isn't really the best option either. As a result, many people go in search of a more "natural" solution.

One of the so-called natural therapies becoming more and more popular for treating allergies, sinusitis, eczema, asthma and other respiratory infections and conditions is salt therapy. It's been used for decades in Europe, but has just caught on in the United States the last few years.

In the 1800’s, in salt caves and mines in Eastern Europe and Russia, it was noticed that workers in the caves did not have respiratory ailments like others who did not work in the caves. The salt mine workers also tended to be healthier overall.

Dr. Feliks Boczkowski founded the first salt therapy treatment in 1839 at a resort facility at the Wielicaka Salt Mine in Poland. He brought particular attention to the fact that staying in the underground salt caves was an extremely effective asthma treatment.

During WWII, doctors observed that people hiding in salt mines and caves began to experience benefits of improved respiratory health. In the 1960’s, underground spa facilities became a popular means of therapy for people with respiratory conditions.

In 1985, the first halogenerator was made, and halotherapy (dry salt therapy) was born. It was first practiced in the USSR and Europe. Salt therapy then spread to Canada, Australia and finally the United States in 2011.

Halotherapy benefits adults and children alike, as well as athletes and animals. It is natural and safe and there are no side effects. A majority of people who visit salt rooms on a regular basis may find relief from a variety of respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, common cold, bronchitis, COPD, cystic fibrosis, and more. Dry salt therapy is great for people who also have particular skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, and recovering from cosmetic surgery.

However, one does not need to have any conditions since dry salt therapy is very beneficial for overall general wellness by removing the toxicity from the respiratory system. People are exposed on a daily basis to pollutants, airborne diseases, bacteria, allergens and other irritating and harmful factors. Halotherapy is an excellent way to cleanse and detox the lungs as well as invigorate the whole body with increased lung capacity and oxygen intake.

For general respiratory hygiene, once or twice a week visiting your local salt therapy facility will enhance the lung capacity, boost the immune system, reduce stress, and aid better sleep.

Dry salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, has been in Europe since the early twenty-first century. The former Soviet Union quickly became a leader in developing the technology for halotherapy. Air is saturated with negative ions created by Himalayan salt. By breathing in these elements, the body gets in balance and begins to heal itself. Dry salt therapy is like a bronchial brush for your lungs. It cleanses and purifies, thereby increasing oxygen in your body. It also cleans the respiratory system by removing buildups of foreign elements that cause various respiratory ailments and conditions. The salt provides PH normalization and induces regenerative processes in the derma, increases skin rigidity, stimulates growth and improves hair health. It also impacts the skin's circulation and enhances the effectiveness of cellular membrane activity.

The Salt Cove FYI

Halotherapy triggers anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic responses in people with bronchial asthma or chronic bronchitis, according to 2014 research.

In a 2007 study, people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) had fewer symptoms and improved quality of life after halotherapy.

Salt is also said to produce negative ions. This theoretically causes your body to release more serotonin, one of the chemicals behind feelings of happiness. Many people use Himalayan salt lamps to get the benefits of negative ions at home. However, there’s no evidence that these lamps have any benefit other than adding ambient light.
