Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) necessary after cosmetic surgery?
Lately, I’ve seen growing concern from patients saying their surgeon didn’t recommend post-operative lymphatic drainage — or that they were told it’s not necessary.
As a licensed massage therapist, physical therapy assistant, and cosmetic post-surgery therapist, I want to offer some perspective.
There are unfortunately many untrained individuals providing “post-op massages” without proper medical knowledge. When treatments are done incorrectly, they can cause more harm than good — increased inflammation, tissue trauma, delayed healing, and even complications. Because of this, some surgeons may be cautious about recommending post-op therapy.
But here’s the key:
When performed by a properly trained medical professional, Manual Lymphatic Drainage is not aggressive massage — it’s strategic, therapeutic care.
The goal is to: • Reduce swelling
• Improve circulation
• Support lymphatic flow
• Minimize fibrosis
• Promote safer, smoother healing
Post-operative therapy should never replace your surgeon’s guidance. It should work in conjunction with your surgeon to support your recovery and optimize your results.
Your healing journey deserves educated, collaborative care — not guesswork.
Always choose a qualified professional who understands surgical anatomy, healing timelines, and when to refer back to your surgeon.
