Vertigo can turn everyday moments into a balancing act.

At Sutter Lakeside Hospital, clinicians are now using advanced infrared goggles for more accurate vertigo assessment and treatment. The goggles capture tiny, involuntary eye movements called nystagmus. These movements help clinicians pinpoint the cause of a patient’s dizziness and determine whether it stems from the inner ear or the brain.

The goggles also record video playback, giving clinicians the ability to review recordings, confirm diagnoses, educate patients about their condition and track progress over time.

Five years ago, Timothy Stephens, CEO of Sutter Lakeside Hospital, never imagined he’d become a runner. At 55, he underwent gastric sleeve surgery and lost 110 pounds; running became his way of honoring a second chance at health. 🏃

Now at 60, he runs 350–360 miles a year — not for speed, but for resilience, discipline and community. “Running is really about grit and determination,” he said.

His message to new runners: start slow, hydrate, listen to your body and keep going, even when it feels hard. 👟

Stephens’ journey is proof that it’s never too late to begin, whether you’re 25 or 55, experienced or new to running, it can be a pathway to better health. ✨
