The National Weather Service has issued a Major-Extreme WINTER STORM WARNING for the Lake County and Mendocino County Areas, with VERY strong winds, Heavy Ran and Flooding of small streams and rivers for the next 24-48 hours.
Impacts:
• Dangerous winds may cause widespread and long-duration power outages as well as downed trees and powerlines.
• Trees may fall across roads.
• Difficult driving conditions, especially for high profile vehicles.
• Temporary fences and structures may be damaged or destroyed.
Timing:
Two rounds of strong winds
• Very strong winds are expected Tuesday night
• There is the potential for another round of strong winds Wednesday night lasting through much of Thursday.
Confidence:
The Tuesday night system is a very strong and fast moving area of low pressure moving towards the coast and eventually on land. There is still a lot of uncertainty on where the strongest winds will. The strongest winds will likely be 50 to 70 mph with higher gusts on the ridges.
Wednesday night and Thursday a second area of low pressure is expected to form off the coast. This one is expected to stall out creating a longer period of strong winds. The strongest winds are expected early Thursday morning, but are expected to remain elevated through the day.
Motorists are encouraged to avoid driving, or use extreme caution, avoid areas of standing water as it may be deeper than you expect. Swift waters across roadways way carry vehicles away. Maintain a wireless device to summon help if needed. Watch for Road Crews and First Responders!
ANYONE needing a warm and/or dry place is welcome at the Resiliency Center at United Christian Parish, 745 N.Brush St. in Lakeport, open Tuesday, December 23, from 12:00pm to 5:00pm.
