Who Is the Green Santa?

Before the bright red suit became famous around the world, Santa Claus had another form — older, wilder, and deeply connected to nature. This was the Green Santa, a figure rooted in ancient winter traditions and the spirit of the earth.

In early European folklore, the Green Santa — often known as Father Christmas — was not just a giver of gifts. He was the embodiment of winter’s magic, the turning of the seasons, and the quiet promise of renewal.

Clothed in deep green robes, he symbolized:
• the life hidden beneath the snow
• the evergreen trees that survive the cold
• the return of sunlight after the longest night
• the sacred cycles of nature

Long before modern celebrations, people honored the winter solstice through Yule, lighting fires and decorating with holly and ivy. During this time, the Green Santa appeared as a guardian of warmth, joy, and rebirth — a gentle reminder that even in the darkest days, life continues.

It was only in the 20th century that the red-suited Santa became popular, replacing the older green-clad spirit. Yet the Green Santa still lives on in folklore, pagan traditions, and the heart of winter magic.

He is the spirit of nature, renewal, and ancient festive joy — the Santa of the forests, the evergreens, and the old ways.

My journey with plants became my path to healing. The soil has a calming effect on me like trees. As a child I stayed in the woods. Barefoot, wild hair, and usually a pack of dogs following. Our children need this grounding. Our children need to feel nature under their feet. They need the wind twirling in their hair as their eyes fill with wondrous adventure. They need to make wishes, mix pine needle potions, and create. Our children need to know they have a safe place to go and just BE when the world asks so much of us.

Clove oil is easily made. 1. Add cloves to a clean jar. 2. Cover with high proof alcohol. 3. Place is a cold dark dry place for 6 weeks or longer. 4. Always burp and shake to jars for optimal extraction. 5. Strain and store.

Today we join falconers around the globe to celebrate a tradition more than 4-6,000 years old. In 2010, UNESCO honored the ancient art of falconry as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—and every year on November 16th, we pause to celebrate the birds, the craft, and the community that make this sport extraordinary.

While we are holding classes today, tomorrow we are hosting a free World Falconry Day celebration at our home at Camp Mary Orton. Our falconers will share stories, history, and demonstrations that bring this timeless partnership between humans and raptors to life.

Come experience that heritage firsthand — and celebrate the beauty, power, and spirit of these incredible birds!

Note: Seating is limited so be sure to bring a Lawn (or folding) chair to ensure you have a seat!
