Meet Althea Dowd, LICSW
Althea is passionate about helping clients move toward the lives they want to live. She finds meaning in hearing each person’s story, exploring where they have been, where they hope to go, and working together to bridge the gap between the two.
She brings a grounded, trauma-informed approach to therapy, informed by nearly a decade of experience in the field. Her specialties include complex grief, bereavement, neurodiversity (including ADHD and autism), complex trauma, and attachment-related needs across all age groups. She draws on evidence-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Complicated Grief Therapy, and the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS).
In the first session, Althea focuses on building rapport, creating safety, and making sure clients feel confident she is the right fit. She incorporates gentle, relatable humor into her work as a way to build connection and create a comfortable, welcoming environment. She values collaboration and sees it as part of her role to help clients find a therapist who is the right match, even if it is not her.
Outside of work, Althea enjoys reading fiction, playing story-rich video games, and leading groups as a GameMaster for tabletop role-playing adventures. A quote that guides her work is, “I have all I need,” a reminder to herself and her clients that even in difficult times, they already have the inner resources to face life’s challenges.
