Do you run with headphones?

During running rehab, we often ask our clients to run without headphones. This allows them to generally be more mindful and work on improving form, feeling pace more accurately, etc.

Many of us run with headphones in and listen to music, podcasts, books, etc.

This is obviously totally fine to do, but don’t underestimate how useful it can be to run without distractions.

Rehab = Training

One of the biggest mistakes the world of Physical Therapy consistently makes is forgetting that rehab is training in the presence of injury.

Rehab and performance lie on a spectrum, they are not totally different things. Rehab still needs to be challenging, just more nuanced than many training programs because we are dealing with an athlete with an injured body part, after a surgery or with limitations of another kind.

The mindset shift of “patient” to “athlete” is a game changer. Make sure your Physical Therapist helps you get there.

Try This For Tight Hamstrings

Hamstrings are a common area of tightness. We see people doing a lot of static stretching, holding end range for 20-60 seconds.

If this kind of stretching feels good, go for it. There is nothing inherently wrong with it, but our patients have had a lot of success with mobilizations like the one shown in this video.

Doing more active mobilizations means you are more in control of the movement and therefore more likley to see better results.

Save this video and give it a try before your next run or gym session.

How to land after ACL surgery

Jumping and landing is a huge part of successful ACL rehab. It isn’t enough to be strong, you have to be able to transfer strength and stability to sport specific movement.

That means training jumping and landing in challenging ways.

The video shows a basic test we do with all our ACL patients. Stepping off a box allows us to assess landing mechanics and confidence by increasing the force an athlete has to deal with.

Compensations can be subtle or more obvious (as in this case). It is important for an athlete to see and feel them so they can learn to move in a more efficient way as training progresses.

What are the compensations you see this athlete using to offload her surgical side? Which side is affected?

How to handle those tough uphills

Strength training is key for runners. A lot of runners don’t strength train at all, so anything is better than nothing.

But if you want to really level up your running performance and resilience, certain exercises are better than others.

Enter the high step up with knee drive.

This is a great exercise to work on hip and quad strength as well as power for running tough uphill stretches. This is a favorite of our running specialist Dr. Sam Olsen.

These kinds of exercises are a great bang for your buck so give it a try the next time you’re in the gym.

If you need help getting back to running after an injury, give us a call. Our experts will get you back on track.

How should runners train?

The recipe for success (and health) as a runner is pretty simple. Doesn’t mean it’s easy.

First, you need to build a solid foundation of fitness and overall tolerance for the stress of running. That means being consistent with relatively easy runs. Punch the clock regularly.

Next, you need to know when to intelligently push yourself with tempo runs, interval training and speed work to build your peak.

Don’t forget to strength train. This is a secret weapon for running health and performance that can’t be overlooked.

What’s the best way to deal with back pain?

Check out our newest blog at the link below to learn all about how we treat low back pain.

https://www.wagnerptp.com/blog/does-core-stability-help-with-back-pain

Exercises like the one in this video are promoted all the time as cures for back pain. There is nothing wrong with exercises like bird dogs, dead bugs and curl ups but they aren’t magic bullets.

These kinds of exercises have their place and we use them regularly, but mostly as a way to warm up or reintroduce movement for a patient in pain.

If you want to truly deal with back pain and reduce your chances of having it in the future, you need to progress past these low level exercises and challenge yourself more.

It can be tough to know how to progress, but we’re here to help. Reach out with any questions.

Yep, just walk backward.

We know this is all the rage right now, but it is actually legit.

During ACL rehab, a lot of athletes have trouble with allowing their knee to move forward over their toes. They need to learn to trust their knee in this position because sports require it.

Our brains are really good at compensating and avoiding certain positions, so it can be useful to change the context of a movement.

Walking or running backwards with a toe to heel pattern forces an athlete to learn to let their knee move over their toes. This is also a sneaky way to strengthen the quad.

Early in rehab we use this to slowly reintroduce this movement.

Later on we use it as part of a warmup, field training session or sport specific conditioning.

Tight hip flexors? Try this

A lot of us struggle with tightness in their hips. Stretching is a great place to start, but doesn’t always do the trick.

Sometimes this is because the root cause of the feeling of tightness is weakness in the hip flexors. Pairing hip flexor stretching with some basic strengthening exercises can go a long way.

Think of it like this: a weak muscle can only control a joint by being constantly stiff. A strong muscle can work to control a joint when it is needed and relax when it isn’t.

The next time your hips feel tight go ahead and stretch, then try this hip flexor lift over to work on strength and control.

Let us know how it goes!
