This morning, I almost said no to something I really wanted to do.

Paddleboarding with a good friend sounded amazing. I knew it would lift my mood. I knew the water and sunshine would fill my cup. It was everything I love.

But when the time came to actually go, it felt like too much.

My paddleboard is heavy, awkward, and stored overhead. My gear was scattered. My dog—who I adore but also stress about—was whining to come. I still had work later that morning. Suddenly this beautiful plan felt more like a burden.

The excuses started stacking up.
Too much work.
Too much prep.
Too much mental load.

I almost bailed.

But I didn’t.

I did all the things. I wrestled the board down. Packed up. Took the dog. Met my friend. And I’m so glad I did.

Because here’s what actually happened:
I didn’t feel drained.
I felt alive.
Recharged.
Grounded.
The entire day carried a kind of vacation energy.

It turns out, joy doesn’t always show up without a little effort.

We think sitting still will renew us—but sometimes, it just deepens the fog. Have you ever skipped something fun because it felt like too much work… and then felt worse by the end of the day? Not rested, not recovered—just disappointed?

Here’s what I’m learning:

Fun takes effort.
Effort gives energy.
And doing the thing—even imperfectly—usually beats doing nothing.

So the next time you’re staring down the “ugh” of getting ready, remember: The version of you that goes will probably be the one that’s most glad you did.
