Something I have heard a lot the last couple of weeks is people believing they have “failed”. Failed at life, failed at sobriety, failed at finances, failed at health/making healthy choices/diets, failed at career development/expansion, failed, failed, failed. This was, of course, accompanied by self-punishment/negative self-talk. I wish we could all just kick this word right out of our vocabulary!

If there are areas that you would like to make changes or need to take accountability or make a plan… Do that. Being accountable for the choices you have made can help you evaluate where you are and where you would like to be. Identify a goal and make a plan to get there. Accountability does not include perfectionism, beating yourself up, putting yourself down, or anything of the sort. Self-hatred and perfectionism will keep you from your goals, not help you obtain them. They are forms of self-sabotage.  Learn how to guide yourself with love, set boundaries with yourself (and others), and use accountability, not toxic guilt and shame.

Stop telling yourself you are not creative or that you are not good at art. Get out of your way and create something

EVERYONE IS CREATIVE AND EVERYONE IS GOOD AT ART. 

Art and the creative process are healing and help with issues of mind, body, and spirit. Art can help reduce symptoms of trauma, anxiety, and depressed mood. It is also a way to help move and express emotions. When you dont know what to do, create something.

Deep breathing techniques are a great tool to have in your toolbox. They can help you calm down when feeling anxious and ungrounded, and when practiced regularly, can be very helpful with nervous system regulation. The words that you say to yourself are very important. Most people can think of times when they have called themselves a name, doubted themselves, or talked negatively about themselves. The part of your brain that is listening will file this information away as true unless you decide to pay attention to what you are saying and change it. One effective way I have explained this for a long time is by asking people to think about their brain like a computer. If you are typing a document with a lot of misinformation, negativity, and other garbage, Microsoft does not call you and ask if that is really what you want to save. Neither will your brain. What are you typing in that document? I’m stupid, I’m fat, I can’t do anything right…

Your brain is listening and storing it away. It already has what it believes to be a lot of proof that those statements are true because of past trauma, conditional love, the many times you have said it to yourself, or heard it from an unhealthy/abusive person in your adult life and childhood. You must make a decision to make a change. What you say to yourself really does matter.

Find. New. Words.

You have to pick what you want to save if you want to get out of old patterns and have the life of your dreams. You have to find new words, a new story. You will not live a joyful life and accomplish your goals and dreams if you are abusive to yourself. One step you can take at any time in learning to love yourself is finding new words.
