MOMENTS OF TRUTH RECIPIENT – BEN BADGER

A “Moment of Truth” at Ensign is when routine care becomes remarkable service. It’s going beyond expectations in ways that truly matter. We’re honored to share one of those moments with you.
* * *
We had an Oaks at Lakewood resident admitted from the hospital who had been living in a transitional housing unit for the homeless. She recently received a phone call that her van (with all of her personal belongings), which was parked at the transitional housing, was going to be towed. Of course, this was very distressing to the resident, as it contained everything she owned. With the Administrator's permission, she arranged to have the van brought to the facility. When the van was enroute to the facility, it overheated and had to be left at a gas station. The gas station said that it could only be left in their parking lot for 24 hours. The next day, Ben Badger, our Maintenance Assistant and Van Driver, drove the resident to her van, checked the fluids, and found that it needed antifreeze. He went in and purchased (with his own money) antifreeze and put it in the van for the resident. Unfortunately, it did not fix the issue. The resident called a tow truck, but they could not come for over two hours. Ben then drove the resident back to the facility.

Two hours later, when the resident received the call that the tow truck was on its way, Ben loaded the resident up for a second time and drove her back to the gas station to meet the tow truck. He stayed with the resident until the van was loaded and then drove her back to the facility following the tow truck.

Ben’s actions helped this resident get her van to a safe location and alleviate the distress and fear she was experiencing over the possibility of losing all of her personal belongings. Ben’s actions were a prime example of a Moment of Truth in “dignifying post-acute care in the eyes of the world.”

Thank you, Ben, for all you do for our residents and community!

Meet Stella Nganga, our Employee of the Month.

Stella was born and raised in Kenya and joined The Oaks at Lakewood two years ago in search of a facility that reflected her values of excellent care and strong professional integrity.

Since then, she has been consistently nominated by residents, families, and fellow staff members, excelling in every category. Stella views her role as a CNA with great pride, recognizing that CNAs are the backbone of healthcare and play a vital role in supporting both nurses and residents.

For Stella, a successful day is seeing residents comfortable and making steady progress. Her personal mission is to positively impact each resident’s quality of life. Although some days can be challenging, she credits teamwork for making every goal achievable.

When asked for advice on how to become Employee of the Month, Stella simply says, “Be yourself and provide quality care every day.”

Stella shares that working at The Oaks at Lakewood has given her greater purpose and fulfillment. She enthusiastically recommends The Oaks at Lakewood to friends and to anyone passionate about dignifying long-term care.

We are grateful for Stella’s dedication, compassion, and commitment to excellence. - MC

Sometimes the best activities aren’t planned.

I saw a quiet dining room yesterday, jumped in, and suddenly we were laughing, moving, and creating together. Not perfect. Not formal. Just fun.

At The Oaks, we measure activities by joy, connection, and how our residents feel. And that’s what matters. - MC

What’s not to love about the Old Grey Cats, the Fiddlers of Washington? Their talent, joy, and passion remind our residents (some are much younger than them) that life still has so much to offer. Living in a skilled nursing home does not make anyone less - it simply means a new chapter. Life is a gift, and every morning we wake up is another chance to see the sunshine, to feel purpose, to help others, and to keep our passion alive. This is what we want our residents to believe: they are valued, they matter, and their lives are still beautiful. - MC

Snowball fight between residents, staff, and managers - pure joy in motion!

What a fun way to keep our residents moving, laughing, and exercising their joints while creating unforgettable memories. This is the kind of community our residents call home - where there’s never a day without smiles, laughter, and connection.
Wouldn’t you want your loved ones to be here too? - MC
