Just like you might hear a flight attendant say on an airplane, put your own mask on first! Your child is constantly watching you, and paying attention to what you say and do. Practicing your own nervous system regulation will not only change your life, but it will change your child's as well.

Let's get down to the nitty-gritty! Dys-regulation is unavoidable, but there's always the chance to regulate again. Next time your kids (or you!) need support, try one of these quick techniques to help come back to center.

Make the unknown, known. One of the biggest ways we can support our kid's nervous systems is through consistency and information. Wherever you can, loop your kids in, because just like with adults, unknowns might cause stress, panic, or fear.

"Today, we're going to the pool and on the way home we are going to stop at the bank. Do you want to bring a book for the car?" "When we get home from dinner, you'll take a bath and then go straight to bed. We're not going to watch a movie tonight. You can start thinking about what book you want to read before bed!"

Tailored to their age, information on what's coming can prevent surprises and help kids stay regulated in new or changing situations.

Have you heard of nervous system regulation? It's the body's ability to adjust and respond to stress, and it doesn't just apply to adults — it's also imperative for kids to learn & practice.

Whether you’re soaking up every moment of summer with your kids, or counting down the days until school starts again, we can’t deny that summer throws some curveballs at parents and kids alike. Changing (or lack of) routines, overstimulation, boredom, an increase in time together or at home; all of these factors (and more) can contribute to big feelings all around.

This week, we’re sharing some tips & information about nervous system regulation from Synergetic Play Therapist Mary Dominguez on how to support your kids (and yourself!) through these long summer days.

Regardless of what’s come your way thus far, let these ideas help make this your family’s best summer yet!

Sick season isn't over yet! Tend to your self physically and mentally by taking a minute out of a busy day to blend this homemade medicine ball tea. Combine chamomile tea, peppermint tea, steamed lemonade, and honey (with some optional add-ins!), and as you drink, take a minute to breathe and be still. Enjoy!

Tips for Healthier Relationships: Be Present in Your Relationship

Focus on being present in your physical body during your time together. Minimize distractions, whether it's through eye contact, touch, or simply being mindful of each other’s energy. This helps deepen emotional intimacy and creates a stronger bond.

Tips for Healthier Relationships: Cultivate Safe Spaces

Create an emotional and physical environment where both partners can feel safe to express themselves without fear of judgment. This might involve setting boundaries around how you communicate, and paying attention to how your body responds to these moments of vulnerability.
