We’re excited to welcome student midwife Ash Wilkenson to the Meadowsweet team!

“Ash (she/her) discovered her love for pregnancy and birth as a young child with the birth of her younger brother when she was six. Enamored with the details of pregnancy and how the process worked, she began studying any information she could get her hands on. She was able to become a doula in her teen years, and had the honor of supporting many births throughout Northern Colorado. In 2009, she completed her degree in Emergency Medicine and worked as a Paramedic until she gave birth to her first child in 2012.

While her passion for birth and pregnancy was innate at a young age, Ash discovered her passion for midwifery care with the birth of her second child, where she experienced the holistic and unwavering support of her own midwife through a changing birth plan. The spark was ignited through that experience and she began studying midwifery formally (and very slowly) in 2016 after the birth of her third child.

Ash continued to doula throughout having her own children and in 2021 accepted a position at a local birth center as a staff doula. In 2022, she was offered the Lead Doula position and continued to serve families through their journeys while leading and mentoring her team. Those doulas are some of her greatest friends and biggest support for her through her journey to midwifery.

Ash connected with Melissa and Sam in the summer of 2024 and is honored to learn and grow under their mentorship. She maintains current Neonatal Resuscitation, Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, CPR and Doula certifications.

Ash lives in Thornton with her partner and 6 children (4 of whom were born at home). Her family is her greatest joy and her oldest kid dreams of being a midwife someday. In her spare time, she enjoys volleyball, horse riding, live music, movies, adventures with her partner, sewing, and hosting get togethers with the people in her life.”

Snuggle baby close

“Positioning and attachment is so, so important when sussing out comfy and effective breastfeeding. As well as positioning your baby so your ni**le is pointing up their nose (rather than into their mouth) remember that your baby needs their chin to anchor to your breast to stimulate them to gape widely, enabling them to latch. If you’re struggling to get the angle figured out, it may well help to move your baby slightly away from your ni**le and more towards their feet, so they have the space to tip their head back and open widely. If they start too close to your ni**le, there may not be room for them to anchor their chin and tip their head back. Keeping your baby’s chin buried into your breast is key to that comfy, deep latch we’re after! Let me know if this helps!”
