It’s getting cold! 🥶❄️

As temperatures drop, cold, dry air can make your eyes feel irritated, scratchy, and dry.

And this can impact your quality of life and even make it difficult to focus on work or enjoy your favorite winter activities.

So... what can you do about it?

Put these 4 tips in action to keep your eyes comfortable this winter:

1. Stay Hydrated
Cold air outside and dry, heated air indoors can cause dry eyes. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body, and your eyes, well hydrated.

2. Use Artificial Tears
Over-the-counter artificial tears can help maintain moisture in your eyes and soothe irritation. For added comfort, consider preservative-free drops, especially if you’ll be using them frequently.

3. Wear Sunglasses on Snowy Days
Snow reflects up to 80% of UV rays, intensifying exposure even on chilly days. Protect your eyes by wearing UV-blocking sunglasses whenever you’re outdoors, especially on bright or snowy days.

4. Add Moisture Indoors
Using a humidifier can help add moisture to dry indoor air and relieve some discomfort. It’s especially helpful in rooms where you spend a lot of time, like your bedroom or office.

If you’re experiencing a lot of dryness or discomfort, don’t hesitate to let us know—the earlier you treat your eyes, the better. At Garden State Eye Center, we’re dedicated to keeping your vision healthy and comfortable all season long.

More than 90% of Americans will develop cataracts by age 65.

With 200,000 cases per year, it is very common—but it is treatable.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Recognize the Symptoms
• Blurry or cloudy vision
• Difficulty seeing at night
• Sensitivity to light and glare
• Seeing “halos” around lights
• Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
• Fading or yellowing of colors

2. Get Regular Eye Exams
Regular comprehensive eye exams are crucial for detecting cataracts early. Your eye doctor can monitor the progression and recommend the best course of action.

3. Surgery
When cataracts begin to interfere significantly with daily activities, cataract surgery is highly effective. This procedure involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens. Advances in cataract surgery now allow for customized lenses that can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses.

✅ Tips for Maintaining Eye Health:
• Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.
• Maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants.
• Avoid smoking, as it can increase the risk of cataracts.
• Control other health conditions like diabetes that can affect eye health.

Stay proactive about your eye health and schedule regular eye exams to catch issues like cataracts early.

If you have any concerns or need an eye exam, give us a call at Garden State Eye Center. We’re here to help keep your vision in top shape!

1,000,000 Americans get treated for eye infections every year.

They can be painful and disruptive, but they are often preventable with proper care and hygiene.

Here are our top 5 tips to keep your eyes infection-free:

1. Wash Your Hands Regularly
Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your eyes or handling contact lenses. This helps prevent the transfer of germs and bacteria, reducing the risk of eye infections.

2. Avoid Touching Your Eyes
Try to avoid rubbing or touching your eyes, especially with unwashed hands. This can introduce bacteria and viruses that cause infections.

3. Proper Contact Lens Care
Follow your eye care provider’s instructions for cleaning and storing contact lenses. Use only recommended solutions and never use tap water or saliva to clean your lenses. Replace your lens case every three months to prevent contamination.

4. Avoid Sharing Personal Items
Do not share eye makeup, contact lenses, or eye drops with others. Sharing these items can spread bacteria and increase the risk of eye infections.

5. Protect Your Eyes from Water
Remove contact lenses before swimming, showering, or using a hot tub to prevent exposure to waterborne bacteria. Wear goggles to protect your eyes while swimming.

Preventing eye infections is all about maintaining good hygiene and following proper care routines. Keep these tips in mind to ensure your eyes stay healthy and clear!

If you have any concerns about your eye infections or eye health, give us a call today at Garden State Eye Center. We’re here to help keep your vision in top shape.

Brown eyes = Blue eyes? 🤔

Did you know that brown eyes have a secret blue hiding underneath?

It's true! All brown eyes actually have a layer of blue pigment beneath the brown. The varying shades of brown we see are determined by the amount of melanin in the front layers of the iris.

In fact, there's a controversial surgical procedure that can permanently reveal this hidden blue by removing the brown pigment. However, this surgery is not without risks and is not widely performed or recommended by most eye care professionals.

This fascinating fact reminds us of the complex and beautiful structure of our eyes!

Everyone knows that sleep is important.

But did you know that a good night’s sleep is crucial for maintaining healthy eyes?

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Reduces Eye Strain
Adequate sleep helps reduce eye strain caused by prolonged screen time and other visually intensive activities. Rested eyes are less likely to feel tired and sore.

2. Prevents Dry Eyes
Sleep allows your eyes to be continuously lubricated, preventing dryness and irritation. During sleep, tear film production is balanced, ensuring your eyes stay hydrated.

3. Supports Healing
Quality sleep enables your body to repair and regenerate, including your eyes. It helps heal minor irritations and maintains overall eye health.

4. Reduces Risk of Eye Disorders
Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to eye-related issues like dry eye syndrome, spasms, and even glaucoma. Ensuring you get enough sleep helps protect against these conditions.

5. Improves Visual Function
Good sleep supports optimal visual function, improving clarity, focus, and color perception. Lack of sleep can impair these functions and affect your day-to-day activities.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there.

But when it comes to your health, it’s crucial to have accurate information.

So let’s set the record straight on some common misconceptions about eye health.

Here are the facts you need to know:

Myth #1: “Reading in dim light damages your eyes.”
• Fact: While reading in low light can cause eye strain and temporary discomfort, it does not cause permanent damage to your eyes.

Myth #2: “Sitting too close to the TV can harm your eyes.”
• Fact: There’s no scientific evidence that sitting close to the TV causes eye damage. However, it can lead to eye strain, so it’s better to maintain a comfortable distance.

Myth #3: “Using computers will ruin your eyesight.”
• Fact: Extended computer use can cause digital eye strain, but it doesn’t permanently damage your eyesight. Following the 20-20-20 rule can help alleviate discomfort: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Myth #4: “Wearing someone else’s glasses will harm your eyes.”
• Fact: Wearing glasses prescribed for someone else won’t damage your eyes, but it can cause eye strain, headaches, and blurred vision.

Myth #5: “Eating carrots will give you perfect vision.”
• Fact: While carrots are rich in vitamin A and support overall eye health, they won’t improve your vision beyond its normal capabilities. A balanced diet with various nutrients is essential for maintaining healthy eyes.

Knowing the facts about eye health can help you take better care of your vision. Don’t let myths mislead you.

66% of U.S. adults used vision correction last year.

Half of the planet will require glasses by 2050.

Yet, most people fail to properly care for them.

If you wear glasses, here’s what you need to know:

1. Clean Them Properly
Always use a microfiber cloth and lens cleaner specifically designed for eyeglasses. Avoid using tissues, paper towels, or your clothing, as they can scratch the lenses. Rinse your glasses under lukewarm water before wiping to remove dust and debris.

2. Store Them Safely
When not in use, store your glasses in a hard case to prevent scratches and damage. Avoid placing them lens-side down on any surface.

3. Avoid Heat Exposure
Keep your glasses away from extreme heat, which can warp the frames and damage the lens coatings. Don’t leave them in a hot car or near heat sources.

4. Handle with Care
Use both hands to put on and take off your glasses to avoid bending the frames. Hold them by the bridge or the frame rather than the lenses to keep them clean and free of fingerprints.

5. Regular Maintenance
Regularly check and tighten any loose screws using a small eyeglass screwdriver. Visit your optician for adjustments to ensure they fit correctly and comfortably.

Take these steps to keep your eyeglasses in top condition and help you keep them good for as long as possible.

If you’d like to explore your options for a new pair of glasses, consult with us.

Feeling the seasonal shift?

As we move into fall, it’s the perfect time to boost your eye health with seasonal foods rich in vitamins and antioxidants.

These nutrients can play a key role in maintaining clear vision and preventing eye conditions down the line.

Here are the top fall foods to nourish your eyes:

1. Sweet Potatoes and Carrots
Packed with beta-carotene, these orange veggies are great for maintaining a healthy cornea and reducing the risk of dry eye. Beta-carotene also converts to vitamin A, which is crucial for good vision, especially in low-light conditions.

2. Leafy Greens (Kale, Spinach, Collards)
These greens are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, powerful antioxidants that help filter harmful blue light and reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

3. Pumpkins and Squash
Fall favorites like pumpkin and butternut squash are excellent sources of vitamin A and C, which help maintain eye health by supporting the immune system and protecting against oxidative stress.

4. Brussels Sprouts and Broccoli
Rich in vitamin C and beta-carotene, these cruciferous veggies support the health of your retina and protect your eyes from damage caused by free radicals.

5. Nuts and Seeds (Almonds, Sunflower Seeds)
Loaded with vitamin E, nuts and seeds help protect your eyes from age-related damage and reduce your risk of cataracts.

Adding these nutrient-rich foods to your fall meals is a simple way to support your eye health while enjoying the season’s best flavors.

Getting old?

Your vision isn't what it used to be?

As you age, your eyes go through various changes that can affect your vision.

Here are MUST-KNOW age-related eye conditions (and tips to address them):

1. Presbyopia
This is the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects. It typically becomes noticeable in your 40s and can be managed with reading glasses or multifocal lenses.

2. Cataracts
Cataracts cause the lens of the eye to become cloudy, leading to blurry vision. Regular eye exams are essential for early detection. Surgery is a safe and effective treatment to restore vision.

3. Glaucoma
This condition is often caused by increased pressure in the eye, which can damage the optic nerve. It has no early symptoms, so routine eye exams are crucial for early detection and management with medication or surgery.

4. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
AMD affects the central part of the retina, leading to loss of central vision. Early detection through regular eye exams and lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and not smoking, can help manage AMD.

5. Diabetic Retinopathy
This is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina. Keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels under control and having annual dilated eye exams can help prevent or slow its progression.

Aging is inevitable, but you can take proactive steps to maintain healthy vision. Wear UV-protective sunglasses, maintain a healthy diet, and manage chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension.

Schedule an eye exam with us today and protect your vision and enjoy clear sight as you age.

Ever notice the little worms that move around your vision?

These are called eye floaters, and they’re more common than you might think.

Floaters happen when the jelly-like substance in your eye, called the vitreous, becomes more liquid as you age. Small clumps of collagen fibers within the vitreous cast shadows on your retina, causing you to see those “floating” shapes.

Most floaters are harmless, but a sudden increase could signal a more serious issue, like retinal detachment.

6 hours and 40 minutes.

That’s how long the average person spends on their screens.

Long hours on your phone and computer could be harmful.

Here are our top tips to help reduce digital eye strain:

1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away to help reduce eye fatigue.

2. Adjust Your Screen
Position your screen so it’s at eye level and about an arm’s length away. Adjust brightness to match your environment.

3. Use Proper Lighting
Make sure your room is well-lit to prevent glare on your screen. Use an adjustable desk lamp if needed.

4. Blink More Often
Blinking keeps your eyes moist and helps prevent dryness. Make a conscious effort to blink more frequently.

5. Use Artificial Tears
Nonprescription artificial tears can help keep your eyes lubricated, especially in dry environments.

Using our digital screens is inevitable, but taking these simple steps can pay dividends and help your eyes stay healthy as long as possible.

If you are concerned about how digital eye strain is affecting your eye health, give us a call at Garden State Eye Center. We’re here to help keep your eyes healthy and comfortable.
