July is Disability Pride Month, when we recognize and honor the invaluable contributions of individuals with disabilities, people who enrich our society with their unique talents, wisdom, and perspectives.

Moreover, a salute to both paid and unpaid caregivers. These devoted souls provide unwavering support to those with care needs.

At Colorado Respite Coalition, we understand the call to care, offering resources, training, and support. We connect them to respite care, ensuring they too get moments of rejuvenation. From family respite vouchers to specialized educational support groups, we're here to aid those shouldering the noble task of caregiving.

What’s the difference between respite care and hospice care? Glad you asked!

Hospice Care focuses on the care, comfort, and quality of life of a person with a serious illness who is approaching the end of life. Hospice is designed for situations when it is not possible to cure an illness or a patient chooses not to undergo certain medical treatments.

Respite Care is for a situation where there are extensive care needs - children with disabilities, adults with disabilities, and older adults. It does not have to be related to end of life care. Respite is an opportunity for caregivers to TAKE A BREAK so they can come back to their caregiving responsibilities refreshed and with more energy to share with their loved one.

June Is Alzheimer’s and Dementia Awareness Month

Know the signs. Take action. If you notice changes in friends, family or others close to you and are concerned for their health — particularly when it involves changes in memory, thinking or behavior — it can be difficult to know what to do or say. Although it's natural to be uncertain or nervous about how to offer support, these changes could be a sign of a significant health concern.

Let’s Celebrate Pride Month!

We believe in fostering a community where everyone feels accepted, valued, and loved for who they are.

Pride Month is not just a celebration; it’s a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s a time to reflect on the progress made towards equality and to recognize the work that still lies ahead. We stand with our LGBTQ+ friends and neighbors in advocating for a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear of discrimination.

Throughout this month, there are events and initiatives planned to show support and solidarity. We encourage everyone to participate and engage in these activities to learn more about LGBTQ+ history, support LGBTQ+ rights, and celebrate the diversity that enriches our community. Have your voice heard! We’re sharing two caregivers to advocate for Medicaid during this critical moment:

(1) Medicaid matters! Help advocate for families! We are compiling personal stories to ensure that the faces of those impacted are in front of decision-makers. If Medicaid is essential to your family, help by sharing!
Send us a photo of your child or family along with brief responses to as many of the following questions as you feel comfortable:

Child’s Name, City & State, Age, and Disability/Medical Condition
How has Medicaid helped your child?
How has Medicaid supported your family as a whole
What would happen if Medicaid services were reduced or cut? Be specific about the challenges your child and family would face.
What do you want lawmakers to understand about your child’s needs and the role of Medicaid?

Send your info to megan@familyvoicesco.org and we will compile these into advocacy materials like the example to share with legislators, policymakers, and media. By submitting a photo and story, you are giving Family Voices Colorado permission to share them publicly for advocacy and education.

(2) You can also email or call your representative to tell them what Medicaid means to your family. The Colorado Community Health Network has created this easy form you can use to send your representative a message:

https://cchn.quorum.us/campaign/111598/ or dial (202) 224-3121 and provide your zip code to get connected with your member of Congress.
