Social skills development is one of the greatest areas of need among neurodiverse teens … and yet the most difficult to get right.

Most social skills therapy groups are run with good intentions
but without empirically validated methods.

PEERSⓇ is different.

PEERSⓇ for Adolescents is a highly structured social skills intervention designed for high school students who want to improve their ability to make and keep friendships.
The 14-week program includes training components for the teen and their parents or caregivers. Each week, 2 sessions are run simultaneously.

In one session, the teens work with our PEERSⓇ Certified Provider to learn new social skills through structured lessons and role play as well as real-world practice and experiences.
In the other session, parents or caregivers participate in their own structured session in which they learn how to support their teen in applying the targeted skills in their daily life.

The course is a transformative experience for the teens and their families.

Our team had such an empowering and energizing time at the annual ASHA convention this month. It was a major debut for at the exhibition hall, and our Director Dr. Tighe presented her model for counseling caregivers about DLD.

This summer, we are offering a highly structured social skills intervention for high school and middle schoolers.

The program includes training for both teens and their parents/caregivers with our PEERS Certified providers.

The curriculum focuses on real-life social situations, including conversational skills, recognizing and choosing friends, solving disagreements, handling teasing and bullying, navigating rumors/gossip, planning and attending get togethers, and more!

But…What is PEERS?

PEERS is an empirically validated (aka - widely researched and globally shown to work) social skills intervention for teens.

PEERS is different because it directly involves parents and caregivers and emphasizes REAL LIFE, up to date scenarios that our teens and adolescents face.

Some children have difficulty making speech sounds correctly. This is referred to as a speech sound disorder. So what does the SLP do? ⬇️

An articulation disorder is when a child has difficulty physically producing a sound (having trouble making an /s/ or /r/ sound, for example). A speech-language pathologist will help a child move their lips, tongue, or other articulators to the right places in order to create the sound correctly.

A phonological disorder is a speech sound disorder that causes a child to have difficulty learning the sound system of our words. They might have trouble hearing/processing the difference between sounds and will produce them incorrectly.

In this case, an SLP would not only help the child make the correct sounds, but also help them to recognize the differences between the sounds that they are hearing and making. 🗣️
