The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are a revered source of inspiration for modern yoga practitioners, offering guidance on leading a balanced and ethical life on and off the yoga mat. Although the complete work contains 195 aphorisms, much attention is placed on the 31 verses detailing the 'eight limbs' of yoga, providing a practical path to attain liberation from suffering. These eight limbs are:

Yama - Ethical Restraints:

Ahimsa (Non-Violence)
Satya (Truthfulness)
Asteya (Non-Stealing)
Brahmacharya (Celibacy)
Aparigraha (Non-Coveting)
Niyama - Observances:

Saucha (Purification)
Santosa (Contentment)
Tapas (Asceticism)
Svadhyaya (Study)
Ishvara Pranidhana (Dedication to God/Master)
Asana - Posture: Originally referred to as finding a comfortable seat for meditation.

Pranayama - Breath Control: Involves regulating breath to prepare for meditation.

Pratyahara - Withdrawal of the Senses: Detaching from sensory distractions.

Dharana - Concentration: Focusing attention on a single point.

Dhyana - Meditation: Meditating on a chosen object of focus.

Samadhi - Pure Contemplation: Merging with the object of meditation.

Beyond these eight limbs, there is a further step called "nirbija-samadhi," denoting seedless contemplation, where the goal is absolute separation of the human spirit from worldly matter.

The interpretation and application of the eight limbs have evolved over time, adapting to the contemporary context of yoga practice. While the ancient teachings may not seamlessly fit into modern yoga, the lessons on treating others, introspection, and deep contemplation remain relevant and complementary to physical practices.
