Accommodations for many diagnoses help level the playing field. However, when it comes to anxiety, a number of accommodations can make the anxiety worse.

That’s often NOT the intention of the school or parents - but a child’s anxiety can put a parent in a tough position to either give into the child’s anxiety and help them feel better in the moment, or teach them how to manage their feelings around anxiety and do the thing anyway.

As this article recommends, if the daily exposure to school isn’t enough to reduce anxiety, this may require the intervention expertise of therapists — not accommodations through school.

Anxiety is tough. Seeing your child distressed is tough. Helping your child build resilience is tough AND helps build life skills & confidence for your child.

The Hatch alarm clock, which mimics the process of the sunrise and helps cue your body into waking up slowly, is being offered to some folks for free here:

After working in a Sleep Clinic during my training as a psychologist, and using it personally with my kids and seeing improvements in their morning mood and ability to wake up independently, this is a go-to recommendation for many clients I work with who have a child who struggles waking up in the AM. Also - I’ve really appreciated their customer service the one time I needed to contact them.

A number of parents want to get their child involved in extracurriculars, but their child isn't into sports, and it's hard to find alternatives.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Eric at Quarter Bend. From reading his profile online, to our first conversation, to hearing about his process of helping kids learn guitar, it's pretty clear he's in this for the kids and understands kids. His profile shares that he is a behavioralist by training, and he uses behavior plans to encourage kids to practice guitar, which may be particularly helpful for kids with ADHD. He also encourages the kids to have lessons in groups to help facilitate friendships, with kids with ADHD often struggle with.

So, if your kid is interested in playing an acoustic or electric guitar, this may be a really good resource for you. He offers a free 60 minute 1 on 1 assessment -- https://www.facebook.com/QuarterBend

Parenting a child with or can be really difficult. A child's worries can elicit what are usually effective parenting techniques. However, with a child who expresses many or frequent worries, these techniques can interfere with a child's ability to learn that they can be resilient and independent. A lot of times, this isn't the parent's intention!

Therefore, it can be really important for parents to learn how to effectively support their child in moments of strong emotions or behaviors, while also teaching them just how resilient they are. Once you teach a kid they can handle their feelings, the child's potential can be unlocked.
