To some the kitchen is a place of joy, creativity and nourishment both in soul and body. To some the kitchen is a place of fear, anxiety and sadness both in soul and body.

Eating disorders shape not only “just food” but the environments around those affected.

Recovery is possible and no lie it takes work. Take the step just one step at a time admitting to yourself and others that your relationship with food is disordered. Then reach out and surrender to support.

The temperature has to be just right … the lighting the right temperature…. Everything … and it won’t ever be good enough for your eating disorder BC it demands perfection all the time…

Exposure response therapy goes like this..

Imagine a line trending up on a graph. The anxiety level rises and reaches a peak when exposed to a certain stimuli. The height of that peak is lowered each and every time a person is presented with the stimuli.

For example ,.. A friend invites you out to lunch at a local cafe or you have a work breakfast meeting over donuts and bagels or you want to try a challenge food- the result anxiety, panic, stress, and lots of conversations from Ed! So you are exposed to a stimuli and then the activity occurs or the challenge food is digested and the " wrath" from Ed Lies in the wings.

But the good news as per exposure response theraphy is that over time the more and more lunches attended with friends or work breakfast meetings or challenge foods eaten the anxiety will dissipate and eventually the goal is to level out flatline dead Ed!!!'

No more emotional response to food and situations around food. Food is neutral, it just is there.

Like in a yoga class -we were instructed to pause with the pose breathe into the shaking and sensations in our bodies And guess what! The longer we held the pose the easier it got!

Exposure response therapy works in yoga on the mat! Then we entered a hip opener asana and the second we got into the pose my hips were screaming tight hips, uncomfortable and itching for an exit door, but I stayed and again the longer we stayed in the pose the less anxiety presented its ugly face!

Your body still needs fuel and rest. Your body does not have to change to suit the season.

How do you treat your body? And how does your body respond to you?

Do you treat your body like crap with the constant expectation that it will then treat you like gold?

The body keeps a score. Level the playing field and give it some love.

Buffet style meals OMG right! Easter Sunday is usually one of those times for me and though living in Lancaster County PA buffets are an option frequently.

Do buffet style meals make your eating disorder go NUTS??

*breaking from your usual habits and routines
*OCD patterns disrupted
*anxiety rising

All of that then watching people select what they want to eat- like actually choosing their desired items can leave the eating disordered brain stunned and frozen with thoughts of comparisons, cognitive distortions and overwhelm.

Take a breath and take one step at a time. Focus on what is next not the past. Stay present and focus on each step along your journey as another tool in your belt.

Experience the things that freak out your eating disorder. After repeated exposures the voice starts to soften and quiet. Trust the process.

Believe you can! It’s a mindset and a choice. It is also a choice to not believe you can. What do you choose? I get it is hard to believe when your eating disorder tells you not to … and I encourage you to try! Turn it over to a believe system that will guide you toward recovery. Believe you can and you are on your way.

What if your body scored you? Do you think you would pass?

For years I failed at taking care of my body. I over worked it, under fed it and beat it up all while expecting it to do everything for me.

So… when I expected this one sided relationship to work .. it didn’t. I wanted it to make me able to have children and it said nope! I have been keeping score and your not healthy enough to take care of yourself let alone others.

The body keeps a score. The relationship with body is one to nurture and it takes work like a relationship with a friend or partner.
