ASD is a spectrum disorder, which means that every child with autism has unique strengths, challenges, and needs. There is no one-size-fits-all path — and no two children experience autism in the same way.

At Swank Early Skills Development, we believe that meaningful progress begins by meeting every child exactly where they are. Our approach is centered on understanding each child as an individual and tailoring programs to support their specific goals, abilities, and learning style.

We are an ABA therapy provider supporting children who have an autism diagnosis.
Our services are individualized, compassionate, and evidence-based because children deserve support designed for them, not a checklist.

If you have concerns about your child’s development, we encourage families to start by speaking with their pediatrician or healthcare provider, who can guide next steps.

Welcome back to Monday Milestones, our weekly series focused on communication milestones and what you may expect as your child continues to grow.

By around 24 months of age, many children begin to:
• Combine at least two words to communicate needs or ideas
(for example: “more milk,” “pick up”).
• Use words along with gestures to express wants.
• Point to familiar objects or people when asked questions like,
“Where’s the ball?”.

These skills are important markers of early language development and understanding.

If you have concerns about your child’s communication or development, we encourage you to start by speaking with your child’s pediatrician or healthcare provider, who can guide you through appropriate evaluations and next steps.

At Swank Early Skills Development, we do not diagnose. We are an ABA therapy provider offering individualized services for children with an autism diagnosis, supporting communication, social skills, and daily living skills through evidence-based care.

We’re here to support your family.

Children communicate in many different ways — through words, gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, sounds, and even play. Communication starts long before full sentences and grows with support, connection, and opportunity.

Typically developing communicators may:
Point or gesture to show wants and needs.
Attempt words, sounds, or simple phrases.
Imitate sounds, actions, or facial expressions.
Use eye contact to connect during play.

It may be helpful to seek an evaluation if you notice:
Little interest in communicating with others.
Rare use of gestures or pointing.
Frequent frustration due to difficulty being understood.
Limited attempts to imitate sounds or actions.

Early support can help children build confidence, reduce frustration, and strengthen their ability to connect with others. Communication is more than words — it’s how children share their world.

The early years of a child’s life are a time of rapid brain growth and development. Research consistently shows that early support can significantly improve communication, social skills, learning, and overall family well-being.

Early intervention is not about labeling, it’s about understanding a child’s unique needs and providing the proper support at the right time. Starting early helps build strong foundations, increases independence, and empowers families with tools and confidence to support their child’s growth.
When we invest early, we create opportunities that last a lifetime.

Welcome back to Monday Milestones, our weekly series focused on early communication development and what you may expect as your child grows.

By around 18 months of age, many children begin to:
• Attempt to say words beyond parents or favorite items.
• Use a growing variety of sounds or early words to communicate wants and needs.
• Follow simple one-step directions, especially when paired with gestures
(for example: “Give me the ball” while pointing).
These early skills support language development, social connection, and learning.

If you have concerns about your child’s development, we encourage you to start by speaking with your child’s pediatrician or healthcare provider, who can guide you through the next steps and evaluations if needed.

At Swank Early Skills Development, we believe in meeting children exactly where they are and supporting families with compassion, respect, and evidence-based care. While we do not diagnose, we are an ABA therapy provider serving children who have an autism diagnosis, helping build communication, social, and daily living skills that support meaningful growth.

Every child grows and learns at their own pace — and that’s okay.

At the same time, developmental milestones give families and professionals helpful guidance about what is typically expected at different ages and when extra support might be beneficial.

By around age 2, many children may:
Use simple words or short phrases.
Respond to their name when called.
Show interest in people around them.
Engage in basic social interactions.

Extra support may be helpful if you notice:
Little to no spoken words.
Limited eye contact.
Difficulty engaging with others.
Frustration with communication or connection.

Noticing these signs doesn’t mean something is “wrong.” It means your child may benefit from additional support during a time when learning and growth happen fastest. Early awareness leads to early support — and early support can make a lasting difference.

If you have questions or concerns, reaching out early can help you better understand your child’s unique development and next steps. You’re not alone in this journey. Visit www.swankesd.com for more infromation.

Welcome back to Monday Milestones, our ongoing series focused on early communication development and what you may expect as your child grows.

By around 12 months of age, many children are beginning to:
• Use at least two consistent sounds or words to label parents, favorite people, or familiar items (for example, “mama” for mom or “baba” for bottle).
• Respond to simple words such as “no”.
• Show understanding through gestures, eye contact, and vocalizations.

These early communication skills help build the foundation for language, social interaction, and learning.

If your child is not yet demonstrating these behaviors, it may be a sign that additional support could be helpful. Early support can make a meaningful difference, and reaching out early is always encouraged.

At Swank Early Skills Development, we provide individualized, compassionate support to help children strengthen communication skills at their own pace while supporting families every step of the way.

Every child learns, develops, and progresses in their own unique way and at their own pace. Some days bring exciting breakthroughs, while others are about quiet practice, repetition, and building confidence one small step at a time.

At Swank Early Skills Development, we meet children exactly where they are. We focus on celebrating strengths, supporting challenges, and creating individualized pathways that help each child grow in ways that matter most to them.

If you ever feel your child may not be meeting expected developmental milestones, trust your instincts and talk with your child’s pediatrician. Early conversations can lead to early support — and early support makes a difference.

For families navigating an autism diagnosis, you are not alone. Swank Early Skills Development is here to help with compassionate, evidence-based support designed to build skills, confidence, and meaningful progress.

Progress is not about comparison. It’s about connection, consistency, and compassion — and growing together, one step at a time.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that often presents with signs and challenges before the age of 3 and continues throughout a person’s lifetime. Autism affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and experience the world around them — and no two individuals with autism are exactly alike.

Early signs may include differences in:
• Communication and language development.
• Social interaction or play.
• Sensory processing.
• Behavior or routines.

If you have concerns about your child’s development, the first step is to speak with your child’s pediatrician or healthcare provider, who can guide you through screening and diagnostic evaluations when appropriate.

Welcome to Monday Milestones, a new weekly series where we break down developmental milestones in a clear, supportive, and parent-friendly way. First up — communication milestones.

By around 6 months of age, you may begin to notice your child:
• Making simple babbling sounds when alone.
• Taking turns making sounds with you — almost like a back-and-forth conversation.
• Responding to voices, facial expressions, and interaction.

These early communication behaviors are essential building blocks for later speech, language, and social connection.

If your child is not yet engaging in these behaviors, it does not mean you have done anything wrong, but it may be a sign that extra support could help. Early identification and support can make a meaningful difference.

At Swank Early Skills Development, we meet children exactly where they are and provide individualized, compassionate support to help them grow their communication skills with confidence.

Helping Children Reach Developmental Milestones Through the Science of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)

Serving children with Developmental Delays and their families with Compassion and Excellence.

Swank Early Skills Development is an Early Intervention, Special Education, and Behavioral Health provider that uses the science of Applied Behavior Analysis to help children throughout Central Pennsylvania reach developmental milestones that they have not yet met on their own or that they have not met with other treatments alone.

As professional Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), we work with families and other professional team members to assess the developmental and/or behavioral needs of a child. Using objective, measurable data from the initial assessment, we collaborate with the child’s family and existing team to establish a treatment plan that incorporates both research-based interventions and the functional needs of the child within his or her environment.

Through the use of Intensive ABA Intervention, we provide ongoing, direct intervention to target the development of communication, participation, visual perceptual & problem solving, imitation, daily living, pre-academic/academic, visual perceptual, social, and behavioral skills in order to help our clients live fuller, more independent lives.
