As we focus our attention of the awareness and hopeful prevention of Human Trafficking this month, below is some important tips:
• KEY WORD IN THIS INFORMATION: GROOMING. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Grooming: A deliberate, calculated process used by traffickers to gain a person’s trust, dependency, and control—so they can exploit them later.
*TIPS FOR PARENTS, TEACHERS & COMMUNITY MEMBERS*
1. Be informed and proactive. Learn normal developmental behaviors versus red flags that could signal grooming or control. Regular conversations about online safety, healthy relationships, and autonomy can create open communication lines with young people.
2. Watch for sudden changes. Pay attention when behavior, friendships, or routines shift significantly without clear explanation. Questions delivered in a non-judgmental way can open dialogue if something feels “off.”
3. Know the environments where grooming can happen. Online platforms, social media, gaming spaces, and even community settings where adults interact with children should be monitored. Encourage children to talk about who they’re interacting with.
4. Respond safely and report. If you suspect trafficking or exploitation, do not try to intervene directly. Contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text HELP to 233733; trained responders can assist with next steps and connect victims with services. Local law enforcement can also be engaged if there is immediate danger.
