Some Helpful Hints to Help Your back if You Need to Do Fall Raking
Stretch to warm up beforehand and relax your muscles afterward. Frequently switch arms while blowing leaves and raking to prevent or alleviate muscle exhaustion.
Use a rake that fits your body size. Using one that is too long or too short can alter your posture, causing muscle strain.
Maintain good form. Muscle pain and strain often result from awkward body positions. To avoid this, keep your legs slightly bent, center your weight, and reach with your arms instead of your back.
Take frequent breaks. Every 20 minutes, stand up, place your hands on your hips, and gently stretch into a back bend for a few seconds (3-5 times), especially before lifting anything. Taking your time reduces the risk of injury.
Bend with your knees. When lifting leaves, keep your back straight and bend at the knees and hips—not the back. The power for lifting should come from your legs and buttocks. Make smaller piles to reduce the weight.
Use a tarp. Leaves are lightweight and can easily be moved using a tarp. Rake the leaves onto the tarp, then pull it to your desired location. This saves your back from constant bending to pick up piles of leaves for bagging or using a wheelbarrow.
Drink plenty of water. Muscles need water to function properly. Staying hydrated helps your muscles coordinate better and support your physical activity.
