🗣️🗣️🗣️CALL TO ACTION, ATHENS, OH!! 🗣️🗣️🗣️

City of Athens, Ohio - News and Informationhas not done enough routine maintenance or general work on the crosswalks to keep them ADA accessible. The sidewalks and curb cuts are crumbling and there is no ADA transition plan, as required by FEDERAL LAW. The city promised to have an ADA transition plan done by the end of 2025 and that never happened. We want to encourage the city to meet their federal obligations and their obligations to the city to allow people with mobility disabilities to fully live their lives.

SOCIL is asking YOU to let Mayor, Steve Patterson and City Safety Service Director, Andy Stone, know your issues about the lack of accessibility with uptown Athens, OH.

Traveling with a disability can sometimes feel stressful because there’s so much to think about before leaving home. I know there have been times I got somewhere and realized I forgot something important. Over time, I started making myself a checklist before every trip, and honestly it has helped reduce a lot of stress and anxiety.

I wanted to share this in hopes it helps someone else feel more confident about traveling. Whether it’s a weekend trip or a longer vacation, being prepared can make the trip a lot more enjoyable.

Sometimes the little things like extra medical supplies, tools, chargers, or even an extra seat cover can make a huge difference when you’re away from home.

Travel should be about making memories, not worrying the whole time about what you forgot. Hopefully this checklist suggestion helps someone feel more comfortable getting out and exploring.

Accessibility matters… and it’s awesome seeing businesses making an effort to include everyone.

We stopped by the Steak ‘n Shake in Athens, Ohio and noticed several features that help make the experience easier for wheelchair users. From a lowered kiosk for ordering, to staff willing to jump in and help, to a lower counter/bar area for dining, they’ve clearly thought about accessibility. Even the fountain drink station was lowered so wheelchair users can fill their own drinks independently.

These small details make a BIG difference for independence and inclusion. Hopefully more businesses continue moving in this direction. Great job Steak ‘n Shake in Athens for helping create a more inclusive experience for everyone!
