Hair oiling is so much more comforting than it sounds — warm the oil, massage it in, and take some time to slow down. A little oil, your hands, and a few minutes of attention can do a lot.

Many people don’t realize how much lymphatic tissue is located in the head and neck. This entire area is rich in lymph nodes, which play a crucial role in removing waste from the body and maintaining proper bodily function. When you massage oil into the top of your head, you’re nourishing your hair and also helping to stimulate the lymphatic system. If you’ve been feeling foggy or tense, that soothing motion can make a real difference. — Kami McBride

Lavender lovers unite!

Lavender is wonderful for the winter blues. This class explores different lavender essential oils that are available and how each can assist your wellbeing.

We will blend with spike lavender, known to have a camphor note and is useful in blends for joint and muscle aches. We will also blend with Kashmir lavender, which has a soft, velvety aroma that can be useful for calming and creating ease in the body and emotions. Each participant will take home blends that they make themselves!

This class is taught by Deborah Zerkle, Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Aromatherapist. Deborah is owner of Homestead Aromatics, an Aromatherapy business that focuses on using local and global ingredients. She creates small batches of organic Aromatherapy products to support family, friends, and the community.

All materials provided.

Today and tomorrow I will be gathering ingredients from my aromatic cupboard to make kits for family and friends. I will send them home with ingredients to make lip balms or body balms that they can tailor to what aroma they would like. I will post the process.

Balms and butters are stocked for the holidays at Keller Market in Lancaster. But, I'm curious...are you making any homemade products for gifts this year? We're getting close, so if you need any suggestions let me know! If you have sweet orange essential oil and unrefined coconut oil you can easily make a tropical treat for someone's skin. Happy to drop more simple ideas leading up to Christmas!

While taking stock of the butters and oils that I have ready to use, I was reminded that I have a LOT of shea butter. Shea is amazing for winter skin, but it has a very intense nutty aroma and can go grainy in a body butter blend. Here is an amazing, well researched blog post by Jade Shutes that helps navigate how to make a smooth butter without that grainy aspect. Basically, cool it quick!

So Why Does Shea go Grainy in Botanical Body Care Products? Understanding Melting Points and Fatty Acids While each plant-based butter is given a general melting point (e.g. Shea butter has a melting point of 89 to 100°F), the melting point can be a poor descriptor because butters are made up of fa...

Our Story

I have been enjoying essential oils for over 20 years! I used them in my massage therapy practice and when I started working for a hospital massage therapy team I knew it was time to become a Certified Aromatherapist. I have over 400 hours of study with amazing teachers like Andrea Butje and Jades Shutes. Offering live classes for the community the last 4 years has been a blessing. Though I still teach live occasionally I now have placed my classes online so I can help more people use essential oils safely and effectively. Click on Events to see the latest offerings. Every month in 2019 I will be featuring an essential oil or carrier on my blog, which includes essential oil information, ordering, ideas, and recipes.
