Kauffman Physical Therapy successfully treats acute and chronic back pain. When possible, patients with acute pain will be seen on the day they call to request an appointment. Patients report that after working with our team, they learn how to manage their condition and to reduce or eliminate use of pain medication. For acute back pain, therapists assess the problem and provide relief from pain using modalities, soft tissue as well as manual therapy techniques. They develop individualized treatment plans that decrease pain, increase flexibility, mobility and function and provide training that enables patients to learn to manage movement and their back condition. For patients with chronic back pain, therapists assess the problem, provide an individualized treatment plan to treat/ manage discomfort, prevent problem aggravation, restore movement and function and educate the patient so that they understand their condition and learn to manage it. Geriatric Care
Kauffman Physical Therapy is a leader in geriatric rehabilitation. Tim Kauffman is a recognized national leader in the field of Geriatric Rehabilitation. In addition to doing research, speaking, writing about physical therapy for geriatric patients, he has edited two books, The Geriatric Rehabilitation Manual, that are used internationally by therapists and health care providers. His third book on this topic will be published this year. Geriatric physical therapy covers a broad range of issues related to the process of aging. Conditions most frequently treated are osteoporosis, arthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, joint and hip replacements as well as other age related movement and function concerns. Geriatric physical therapy is an evidence-based treatment for older adults to improve their strength, function, balance and confidence so that they are able to ‘keep on the move’. It includes exercise, manual therapy, strength training, fall prevention, mobility training, restoration of function and education. The goal of geriatric physical therapy is to help people maintain the highest quality of life through the aging process. Kauffman Physical Therapy evaluates, treats, creates individualized exercise programs, offers group exercise programs through the Better Bones Better Balance classes and works to provide the exercise component of evidence based care to prevent and to manage Osteoporosis. For more information about our work to prevent and to manage Osteoporosis, please go to our website and/or contact our office. Aquatic Physical Therapy
Kauffman Physical Therapy has its own specialized, heated therapeutic poll for aquatic physical therapy. It is easily accessed for persons with mobility problems. It is ideal for persons with a variety of conditions because water provides buoyancy that allows patients to exercise and move with decreased pain and without the stress of gravity. Water also provides hydrostatic pressure that alleviates pain and swelling. Aquatic therapy is individually designed for each patient’s special needs and therapeutic goals. Even patients who cannot swim can benefit from these invaluable sessions. Only one patient is permitted in the pool at a time and has the therapist’s undivided attention. For more information, contact our office at (717) 396-7766. Home Health Services
Kauffman Physical Therapy does provide some home health services when needed for patients on a case by case basis who reside within a 10-mile radius of the office. Call the office for more information regarding the availability of this service. Wellness
Designed to fulfill special requests by our patients, Our Wellness Program is ideal for those individuals who are not comfortable in a tradition gym setting, for those who feel that that the gym classes and trainers are too advanced for them or for those who need the guidance of a therapist when strength training or exercising. Attention is directed to developing personalized exercise plans that can include one or more of the following supports: fitness training, strength training, explanation of proper warm-up, cool down, exercises appropriate for certain activities, plus correct body position and posture. The Wellness Program is paid monthly by patients and is not covered by insurance. Direct Access
Kauffman Physical Therapists are licensed to provide Direct Access evaluation and treatment. Direct Access means that patients are able to contact Kauffman Physical Therapy and set up an appointment without having to see a physician first. Research has shown that the direct access/self referral process eliminates the burden of unnecessary visits to physicians, and avoids delays that can be caused by the referral process. Direct Access is covered by most health insurance plans. As a courtesy, we will contact your insurance company to verify your health benefits, which will be printed out on our intake form and presented for review on your first visit. For patients who are referred for physical therapy or for those who used Direct Access to get our services, Kauffman Physical Therapy maintains close communication with each patient’s physician. Facilities
Our office, pictured above, is located conveniently minutes from Route 30 and just off New Holland Avenue and Ross Street in Lancaster. The office was designed specifically for physical therapy with individual treatment rooms that give patients privacy during evaluation and treatment, a ‘gym’ for exercise, a gait pathway for evaluation and exercise and a therapeutic pool. Parking and access to treatment is excellent. Parking for patients with mobility or pain issues is next to the building. A source of pride with our building is our solar panels. Kauffman Physical Therapy’s Lancaster office became a solar-powered operation in July 2004 with the installation of 30 photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof that converts sunlight into electricity. In December 2009 we added 47 new panels. This will increase our original 4.95KW system by 9.6KW to make at total system of 14.55KW and when we make excess electricity it will be sold back to the grid. Solar energy powers the lights and equipment and heats the water in our therapy pool. We believe that alternative sustainable energy like our photovoltaic and hot water systems is the future as we experience it now. Our landscaping is a source of pride as well as a labor of love. We have worked at trying to create a landscape using mostly native plants that will attract birds and butterflies. Sometimes conditions get ahead of us but at other times, Mother Nature gives us a lovely backdrop. Photos of our facilities are on the website.
