On May 21, 2026 our President, Nicki Nafziger, presented the Karen Shenk Memorial Scholarship to Penn Manor Senior, Samantha Smith.

The Karen Shenk Memorial Scholarship honors the legacy of our formal president and co-founder by awarding one Penn Manor Senior a $1,000 Scholarship each year. The recipient, like Karen, must be pursuing a career in health and human services with a strong dedication to community service.

Karen dedicated 3 decades of service to Lancaster County's senior citizens and adults with disabilities through both volunteerism and vocation prior to her passing in 2015. She spent nearly a decade traveling to Nicaragua, where she frequently led teams of young adults and teens, working in programs that provided food, built homes, and equipped church leaders. Karen also served locally on several boards and community organizations such as Millersville Business Association, PMEF, Sertoma, Next Gen. Senior Center, Transformation Ministries and more. Karen's mission was to point others to Jesus through her service.

Thank you to those who have contributed to honor Karen's legacy!

Congratulations Sammy!

Navigating conversations with people living with dementia requires compassion and understanding! 🫶🏻🫂💕

These gentle communication strategies help preserve dignity and create meaningful connections. It’s about creating a safe, supportive space where your loved one feels valued and understood.👇👇👇

**Patient Presence**
Stay visible and maintain eye contact to help your loved one feel secure and engaged. Your calm, reassuring presence can make all the difference in reducing anxiety and confusion.

**Creating Trust**
Avoid questioning or doubting their experiences, even if they seem unclear. Trust-building is essential - validate their feelings and reality rather than correcting them.

**Mindful Interactions**
Take a deep breath and maintain positive energy, even during challenging moments. Your emotional state greatly influences the quality of interaction.

**Gentle Pacing**
Remember that processing information takes extra time with dementia. Pause patiently between sentences, allowing your loved one to respond at their own pace. This shows respect for their voice and participation.

**Clear Expression**
Using simple, clear language isn’t about talking down - it’s about making communication accessible and comfortable. Focus on one thought at a time to help maintain meaningful dialogue.

Remember, behind every interaction is a person with a lifetime of experiences. Your patience and understanding help maintain their sense of dignity and connection to the world around them. Thank you for showing up!
