The holidays are just around the corner, which means that holiday decorating is as well! Unfortunately, every year thousands of homeowners suffer painful injuries as a result of accidents related to holiday decorating.

Injuries from ladders, electric shock, tripping over wires, lifting and stretching and more will put a damper on your holiday 🎄 season and beyond.

Here are a few important safety reminders as you get started decorating this season:

1. Follow ladder safety. Avoid using metal ladders when hanging electrical wires. Only allow 1 person on the ladder at a time. Ensure the ladder is at least tall enough that three steps are above the roof line when getting on the roof. Wear safety/sturdy shoes.

2. Use outdoor extension cords and thoroughly inspect all cords and lights for frays or damage.

3. Plug all electric decorations into GFCI outlets.

4. Use only decorations designed for outdoors.

5. Never staple or nail wires.

Bonus tip: stretch thoroughly before starting, and use proper form when lifting from the ground! 💪🏼

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine that can also include twisting.

On an X-ray, a scoliotic spine may look like a “C” or “S” instead of a straight line. Signs can include uneven shoulders or hips, a prominent shoulder blade, or one side of the rib cage sticking out.

Common signs and symptoms:

✔️Leaning to one side
✔️Uneven shoulders or hips
✔️One shoulder blade that is more prominent than the other
✔️One side of the rib cage sticks out more than the other
✔️Clothes may not fit well
✔️Back pain, which is more common in adults

Chiropractic care for scoliosis focuses on managing symptoms like pain and stiffness, improving posture, and enhancing spinal mobility through adjustments and exercises. While it cannot reverse the underlying structural curve, it can help improve nervous system function and overall spinal health.

Some studies suggest that a combination of chiropractic treatment with other methods may lead to reduced spinal curvature, particularly in milder cases.

If you have scoliosis, or other undiagnosed back pain, or are seeking a second opinion for your current treatment plan, contact our office for an evaluation with Dr. Santana today.

Poor sleep positions, especially stomach sleeping, can worsen disc degeneration by putting unnatural pressure on the spine, flattening its natural curves, and causing misalignment. This leads to increased strain on muscles, ligaments, and discs, which can lead to more pain and potentially accelerate tissue degradation over time.

Specifically, stomach sleeping forces your neck into a twisted position and flattens your lower back, preventing your spine from relaxing and recovering properly.

How poor sleep positions affect your spine:

▪️Incorrect spinal alignment: Poor positions, like sleeping on your stomach, force your spine out of its natural alignment, causing the structures supporting it to tense up instead of relaxing.

▪️Flattened spinal curves: Lying on your stomach flattens your spine’s natural curves, putting extra stress on your lower back and forcing your neck to twist.

▪️Increased pressure: Certain positions increase pressure on the spinal discs, ligaments, and muscles, hindering their ability to recover from the day’s activities.

▪️Tissue strain and inflammation: Sustained, asymmetrical positions can lead to microdamage in spinal tissues and inflammation, which can contribute to disc and ligament degradation.

▪️Neck and back pain: Stomach sleeping particularly strains the neck by forcing it to turn, while other positions can create rotational stress or strain the lower back.

Is your sleep style and habits causing you pain? Schedule an appointment with Dr. Santana today!

Did you know that regular chiropractic care can help manage your fibromyalgia symptoms?

Chiropractic care can be a beneficial part of a fibromyalgia management plan by helping to reduce pain, improve mobility, and enhance overall quality of life through gentle, low-force adjustments and soft tissue therapies like myofascial release.

While it is not a cure, the holistic approach can improve symptoms by restoring spinal alignment, reducing muscle tension, and supporting nervous system function, and it may be most effective when integrated with other treatments.

If you have pain associated with fibromyalgia, contact our office today to schedule an evaluation and consultation with Dr. Santana to discuss how chiropractic care can help you manage your symptoms for a better, pain-free lifestyle.

A bulging disc in your neck occurs when the rubbery cushion between the vertebrae of your neck flattens and pushes outward into the spinal canal, but the outer layer of the disc remains intact.

This condition is often caused by age-related wear and tear or degenerative disc disease and can cause symptoms like neck pain, numbness, or weakness in the arms and hands. It may also be an asymptomatic condition discovered during imaging for another issue.

If you have neck, back or muscle pain that is related to a spinal condition or injury, or if you need a second opinion for your current treatment plan, we can help.

Call our office today to schedule an appointment.

Five key benefits of purposeful stretching include increased flexibility and range of motion, reduced risk of injury, improved posture, better blood circulation, and relief from muscle tension and stress.

These benefits enhance daily activities, physical performance, and overall well-being by preparing muscles, joints, and ligaments for movement.

Lets look at the five benefits in more detail:

▪️Enhances Flexibility and Range of Motion

Stretching lengthens muscles, tendons, and ligaments, allowing joints to move through their full range of motion. This makes everyday tasks and physical activities easier and more effective.

▪️Reduces Risk of Injury

Flexible muscles are less prone to strains and tears. Stretching helps correct muscle imbalances, which can lead to poor posture and increase injury risk.

▪️Improves Posture

By stretching tight muscles in areas like the chest, back, and hips, you can encourage better alignment and proper posture, reducing musculoskeletal pain.

▪️Boosts Blood Circulation

Stretching increases blood flow to muscles, delivering essential oxygen and nutrients. This helps muscles work more effectively and can speed up recovery.

▪️Alleviates Muscle Tension and Stress

Regular stretching helps to release physical tension and can have a calming effect, reducing both physical discomfort and psychological stress.

By incorporating purposeful stretching into your routine, you can enjoy these benefits and maintain a more active and healthy lifestyle!

Did you know?

Rolling a ball underneath a bare foot helps to relieve tension, stimulate circulation, and improve flexibility in the foot by massaging the muscles and fascia. This self-myofascial release can help alleviate pain from conditions like plantar fasciitis and is a simple way to promote relaxation.

To perform this, sit down, place a ball (like a tennis, lacrosse, or golf ball) under your foot, and gently roll it back and forth from your heel to your toes, applying light to moderate pressure.

Benefits:

▪️Relieves tension and stiffness: It helps to loosen the tissues in the bottom of the foot, including the plantar fascia.

▪️Improves circulation: The massage action can increase blood flow to the area, delivering nutrients and promoting healing.

▪️Reduces foot pain: It is often recommended for alleviating discomfort caused by conditions like plantar fasciitis.

▪️Enhances flexibility: Rolling can improve the flexibility of the foot’s tissues.

▪️Promotes relaxation: The exercise can be calming and help you relax, especially before bed.

11/04/2025

Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a condition where the spinal discs, which act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae, deteriorate and lose their function over time. This can cause pain, stiffness, and limited mobility in the spine.

The spinal discs are made of a tough outer layer and a soft, gel-like center. As we age, the discs can wear down, leading to:

1. Loss of disc height
2. Tears in the outer layer
3. Bulging or herniation
4. Reduced cushioning

DDD can occur in any part of the spine, but it’s most common in the lower back (lumbar) and neck (cervical) regions.

Symptoms may include:

- Back pain
- Stiffness
- Limited mobility
- Pain radiating to arms or legs
- Numbness or tingling

Treatment options vary depending on severity and may include physical therapy, medication, lifestyle changes, or surgery.

Are you concerned about your back pain or seeking a second opinion for your current diagnosis?
