Teaching children how to meditate and focus is my main goal with all my pediatric occupational therapy clients. When we are calm and focused, we are able to receive, obtain, process, integrate, and respond to stimuli with excellence. As an OT and a yoga teacher, I believe creating this foundation for our kids will build that solid foundation in which to grow and succeed in all areas of life.

Happy New Year from our family at Homegrown Kids OT to yours🧘🏼‍♀️

What would I tell myself if I were an OT student again? I would tell myself that this job is absolutely nothing like you pictured, it's so much more. That just because everyone may question what you are doing doesn't mean you aren't doing your job right.

A lot of people view us as the unfamiliar kid's therapists who play with playdoh and make kids lay on their belly. People think we help kids write and learn how to tie their shoes.

Do we help kids write and tie their shoes? Sure, if that is important for their function. There is so much more to it than that. Why do we have kids play with playdoh while laying on their belly? The playdoh is to give them sensory input while strengthening their hands so they can sign their name someday in a busy environment and not become distracted. Laying on their belly helps develop core muscles needed to hold them up when it comes time to sit at a desk and focus on learning instead of being too tired to sit up for hours on end. Core strength is also directly correlated with breath support, which then impacts speech and the ability to talk in full sentences.

Not only do we provide therapy to our kiddos, we also provide a sounding board for parents who are often confused, worried, unsure, frustrated, and tearful because they just don't know how to help their child, the one thing a parent is "supposed" to know. We provide hope because "not yet" doesn't mean "never". We wipe boogers off our kiddos but we also often wipe tears of those kiddo's loved ones who have never felt heard or understood until we came into their lives.

We stand for hope. We stand for inclusion. We stand for progress. We stand for loving every child as if they are our own and becoming apart of countless families over the years. We stand for these children when they cannot stand for themselves.

We are pediatric occupational therapists. ❤
