The Fremont Symphony Orchestra is presenting a program called “Cinematic Adventure” on March 14, according to Music Director Rebecca Murdock. The concert will be performed at the Lander Valley High School auditorium at 7 pm.

Concert tickets are available https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/2026-spring-fso-concert-cinematic-adventure.

The Lander High School and CWC Choirs are invited back to perform with the FSO by Director Murdock. They will be performing two pieces from Mozart’s “Requiem”: “Dies Irae” (Day of Wrath) and “Lacrimosa” (tearfully) from the movie “Amadeus” and “Dry Your Tears Afrika” from the movie “Amistad”. Murdock has invited choir directors Dr. Susan Volbrecht, and Dr. Jeremy Cochran to direct the two Mozart pieces. The two choirs add approximately 80 people to the stage.

In addition, the orchestra will perform other classic movie scores, including “Go West” –from the movies “Magnificent 7,” “Hang ‘em High,” and “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.” Also, “A Song of India” by Rimsky-Korsakov was used in the 1949 Adventure film of the same name. “2001 A Space Odyssey” will be represented by “The Beautiful Blue Danube Waltz” by Johann Strauss, and the musicians will perform “Intermezzo” by Mascagni from “Raging Bull” and “Godfather Part III.” The orchestra will also perform “Tahiti Trot”, a piece written by Shostakovich on the theme from “Tea for Two” from the 1950 movie “No, No, Nanette.”

The LVHS Auditorium will become a theater from 1917 with the showing of the silent film “The Adventurer” starring Charlie Chaplin arranged and directed by visiting artist Andrew Greene from Baltimore, MD. The feature is sure to bring lots of laughs to the audience.

The FSO is grateful for the financial support of the Lander Community Foundation, Lander District Recreation Board, and many individual contributors.

City of Lander Appoints Kelly Waugh as Police Chief
Full Press Release: https://www.landerwy.gov/news

The City of Lander is pleased to announce the appointment of Kelly Waugh as the City’s new Police Chief. Chief Waugh was officially sworn in at the Lander City Council meeting on February 10, 2026, after serving as Interim Chief since April 2025. He has been with the Lander Police Department since December 2023 and brings nearly 20 years of law enforcement experience to the role.

As Chief, Waugh is focused on strengthening community relationships, enhancing professional standards, and preparing the department for the future.

“One of my top priorities is building strong relationships between our department and the community we serve,” said Chief Waugh. “We want our officers visible, engaged, and actively involved in Lander while providing safety education and support to residents and businesses.”

In 2026, Chief Waugh plans to launch a six-week Citizen Police Academy to give residents greater insight into department operations and foster transparency and trust.

Internally, Waugh is prioritizing clear procedures, improved processes, and succession planning as the department works toward maintaining high standards and pursuing CALEA accreditation.

Training remains central to the department’s mission. Officers participate in online legal training through Daigle Law Group, supplemented with real-life scenario-based training and review of past incidents to identify opportunities for improvement. The department is also leveraging the expertise of its subject matter specialists and strengthening records management with the support of a new administrative assistant.

The department is currently hiring a Police Captain to fill the vacancy created by Waugh’s promotion. Once filled, the department will be fully staffed.

“I’m honored to serve the City of Lander and look forward to continuing to build a department our residents can be proud of,” Waugh said.

The City of Lander congratulates Chief Kelly Waugh on his appointment and looks forward to the continued growth and success of the Lander Police Department under his leadership.

Take It Slow on Mortimore Lane to Protect Great Gray Owls
Full Press Release: www.landerwy.gov/news

In coordination with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the City of Lander, motorists are encouraged to slow down when traveling on Mortimore Lane to help protect great gray owls currently using the area.

Each winter, beginning in mid-January, great gray owls move into parts of central Wyoming to hunt. These large, striking owls are a special sight for the community, but they are also vulnerable—especially along roadways.

Over the past three years, a couple of great gray owls have frequented Mortimore Lane near the intersection with Hillcrest Drive. Tragically, each year, one of the owls has been struck and killed by a vehicle. These repeated collisions highlight the need for increased caution.

Great gray owls hunt low to the ground, often flying just a few feet above the surface as they search for prey. In winter, small mammals are drawn to roadside areas, which brings owls close to traffic. Along Mortimore Lane, owls regularly hunt on both sides of the road and frequently fly low across it, increasing the risk of collisions with vehicles.

Motorists are asked to slow down along this corridor, especially during early morning and afternoon or evening hours when owls are most active. Reduced speeds give both drivers and owls more time to react and can help prevent further losses, as owls have limited ability to quickly change their flight path.

The owls may remain in the area for a few more months before moving on. If you see the owls, please enjoy them from a distance. We appreciate the community’s willingness to slow down, stay alert, and help protect all Wyoming’s wildlife.

For more information about great gray owls, please contact Rene Schell with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department at (307) 332-2688.

City of Lander Reminds Public about Burn Permit Procedures and Safety
Full Press Release: www.landerwy.gov/news

With a mild winter, many residents are getting an early start on spring cleanup. The City of Lander is committed to keeping the community safe by reminding residents of proper burn practices and permit requirements.

Burn permit applications are available at City Hall or online at landerwy.gov/forms. A $50 nonrefundable application fee is required and must be paid at least five business days prior to the scheduled burn.

A permit is required for the controlled burning of leaves, brush, grass, or untreated wood products within city limits. Burning trash, garbage, refuse, or hazardous materials is strictly prohibited to protect public safety and air quality.

Chris Johnson, Airport and Fire Hall Manager, said, “As residents begin yard work earlier this year, we want to remind everyone that a burn permit is required within city limits. The permit process allows us to review safety conditions and reduce fire risks. Permit holders must notify dispatch before they begin burning and again once the fire is completely out so emergency responders can properly manage any related calls.”

Johnson also noted that recreational or residential fire pits do not require a burn permit, provided they follow established safety guidelines.

For additional information, contact Chris Johnson, Airport and Fire Hall Manager, at (307) 330-3408.
