Healing is a process not a destination. Mountain Pearl has introduced the idea of using the influence of the seasons as gentle guides in our day to day approach to achieving and maintaining good health.
In the midst of this winter season I offer this quick practice to help nurture winter’s opportunity for reflection, introspection and focus on our inner light. This will take 10-15 minutes and is an abbreviated version of the Four Chambered Heart Meditation. You don’t need to know any anatomy, just use your own imaginative visual:
Once you have found a quiet place and some stillness, visualize your heart with its 4 chambers. Invite it to come forward and fill your immediate field of energy.
** Take a deep breath into the left upper chamber, and continue with this breath. This is your “full heart”. Sense the abundance. Stay there as long as you like…
** Now, continuing with the same breath, direct it to the left lower chamber. This is your “open” heart. Open up to all that you can take in, even the uncomfortable and unfamiliar, with no judgement. Stay here as long as you like…
** Move your focus to the right upper chamber with a relaxing full breath. Even if the full breathing is becoming painful, try to continue with it. This is your “clear heart”. This is where you will find total clarity, perfect reflection. Stay here as long as you like…
** Finally, with powerful breathing, move to the right lower chamber. This is your “strong heart”! Feel the power coming up into this chamber from the earth, your root! Continue power breathing: this is your dream, your strength, your battle standard. Own this.
** Finish by breathing normally into all 4 chambers at once…this is you, your center, your spiritual heart. Stay here as long as you like…
Remember: wherever your attention goes, there also will your energy flow! In future offerings, I will explain how our breath—our life force—can be enhanced by craniosacral work with the respiratory diaphragm.

Note that in the diagram, once below the Quadratus Lumborum (located in your low back) only one side of the body is indicated. This is why remembering to stand up straight is a temporary fix.

Your tongue acts as a rudder and support system through a fascial line that runs right down to your toes!

In nearly all my patients, I see poor tongue posture, and the links to bad spinal posture, breathing, and other issues are felt right throughout the body.

The simplest way we can see how the tongue is so influential is how it supports proper head posture. When the tongue is down and forward, forward head posture and mouth breathing occurs.

Over time this associates with a narrow jaw, crooked teeth, and sleep disorders.

But… you guessed it, as always the mouth is a gateway for so many other systems in the body.

The tongue is an extremely complex muscular and fascial rudder system. This dissection via shows the deep front lines fascial connection.

It guides all the structures of the myofascial continuity that runs from the inner arch of the foot all the way up through the middle of the body to the tongue and jaw muscles.

Isn’t that amazing?

Actually the tongue is potentially more important for core stability than turning on your actual core.

Our core begins deep under the arch with the insertions of the tendons from the lower leg, especially tibialis posterior.

To find its insertion, feel just under the inside arch of the foot, just underneath and forward of protrusion of the navicular bone you can feel a bit over an inch in front of your tibial malleolus on the inside of your ankle.

This point will respond to a soft-but-energy-rich touch that is held, and also to a more firm and direct fascial release. Pressing here can make a flow of feeling run up the fascial line.
So for better core support, spinal, hip and leg strength, you need to work on your tongue posture.

During exercise practice sealing the tongue to the roof of the mouth, this turns on the fascial rudder to the toes. It takes time and you need to work on making the BACK of the tongue connect to the soft palate. More on this to come.

Have you noticed jaw or hip issues?

Last week I enjoyed a one day class taught by Dr Lisa Upledger in SLC. What a great opportunity to learn from Dr John's widow and a 30+ year practitioner of CranioSacral Therapy. There's always more to learn, and feel.

Very cool observation

C2 stands out to me as one of the most beautiful and thought provoking of our bony morphology. To me it appears to be a person in prayer. I love the thought that deep within my bones, just beneath my worried head, there exists the living form of a being in perpetual prayer for me~ for us. Who doesn't need that?! And that gift is secreted away within us, pointing the way. As below, so above. When we place our hands before us in mutual contact, a heart-circuit is formed, and charge created, that emanates beyond the limits of our skin. You can feel this for yourself. Enjoy!
