Idiopathic scoliosis is not caused directly by poor posture. However, poor posture and weakness increase the risk of scoliosis progression which may require bracing and in some instances surgery. There is no actual cure but with a good understanding of precautions, exercises and posture people can lead a normal life with no complications from the scoliosis.

The asymmetric growth of the spine causes muscular and soft tissue imbalances. Muscles on the concave side are shortened and get stimulated by stretching with activity, creating more compression and torsion on the spine and facilitating curveprogression. Muscles on the Convex side are elongated and fibrotic therefor inefficient and unable to counteract the hyperactive muscles on the concave side. This muscular imbalance is activated with all activities of daily living and will facilitate the curve to progress if these muscular imbalances are not managed. Even if the muscular activity is facilitated correctly, there are connective tissue and fascial restrictions that need to be addressed with manual therapy and postural reeducation.

The spine has 3 planes of movement
• Frontal plane movement is bending side to side
• Transverse plane movement is rotating the trunk
• Sagittal plane movement is forward bending (flexion) andbackward bending (extension)

Scoliosis affects all three planes (3D) in different degrees depending on the curve type.

A traditional x-ray usually asses one plane of movement which is the frontal plane. The traditional measurement is the Cobb angle which assesses the spine’s curve from right to left but does not address the rotation or flexion/extension (bending) of the spine.

Scoliosis is a condition involving an abnormal curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is a triplanar (3D) condition. It can be caused by congenital, developmental or degenerative problems, but most cases of scoliosis actually have no known cause. This is called idiopathic scoliosis.

Idiopathic scoliosis cannot be prevented and it is not caused by poor posture. However, poor posture and weakness increase the risk of scoliosis progression which may require bracing and in some instances surgery. There is no actual cure but with a good understanding of precautions, exercises and posture people can lead a normal life with no complications from the scoliosis.
