RIP Officer Fitzgerald

ANNOUNCEMENT:

On February 18th, 2023, Sgt. Christopher Fitzgerald of the Temple University Police Department was struggling with a suspect in an area where earlier robberies occurred when he was tragically shot and killed.

Sgt. Fitzgerald, who had only served just 16-months with the Temple University Police Department but had served nearly 12-years in total in law enforcement, was just 31-years old and left behind a wife, four children, parents, and siblings.

On February 22nd, Zechariah ran a mile to honor the life of fallen Sgt. Fitzgerald. Along with conducting this mile, and with permission from the Temple University Police Association, Running 4 Heroes conducted a two-week long fundraising campaign to help support the family that Sgt. Fitzgerald left behind.

Thanks to the generous support of our followers, we were able to raise $2,885 for the Fitzgerald family. This check is being written, and will be personally delivered to the family by Morgan, our New Jersey based Youth Runner, in the coming weeks.

Please continue to keep the Fitzgerald family, as well as everyone with the Temple University Police Department, in your prayers.

Lawrence Township, Mercer County, New Jersey

Yesterday afternoon, the Lawrence Township Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen that a young man seemed confused and was walking in the area of Lawrence High School. When officers arrived and began speaking with him, they noticed that he had a Lville S.A.F.E. sticker on the back of his cellular telephone. The officers were able to ascertain his identifying information. Once put in our CAD system, it turns out that the young man was Autistic. We knew this because his parents had registered him with the LVILLE safe program. Because he was registered, we were able to get additional information including parents contact numbers, medical concerns, behaviors expected, best way to approach, communication methods, responses to stress and calming strategies. This allowed officers to effectively communicate with the young man and his parents all while keeping him calm.

The LVILLE Safe program is a registry with the police department designed for people with disabilities. It allows officers to understand the situation and the characteristics of the registered person prior to the officers having contact with them. This also allows officers to effectively develop coping mechanisms which keeps everyone safe.

If anyone is interested in registering for this program, they should contact Detective David Burns at (609) 844-7124, (dburns@lawrencetwp.com) or Officer Suzanne Girard at (609) 844-7132 (sgirard@lawrencetwp.com). Additional information can also be found on the police portion of the Lawrence Township website.

Yesterday, along with the FOP Survivors Fund, we awarded $3,000 to Philadelphia Police Officer Mark Swierczynski.

Officer Swierczynski's home caught on fire in January 2020 and then a contractor ran off with his insurance money before completing the renovations.

Throughout this ordeal, Officer Swierczynski never told anyone all while his family, including 5 children, sometimes had to live in a hotel.

We are happy to support the Swierczynski family during this tough time, all of which is made possible by you, our riders, supporters & sponsors!
