As a cancer patient, it is vital that you consume highly-nutritious food for your body's recovery. On the other hand, certain cancer treatments may affect taste, smell, appetite, and the ability to each enough food or absorb nutrients from food. So, what can you do? When Marianne started working with us, her focus, energy, and stamina were very low. She shared:

"I was amazed at how different this program is compared with regular physical therapy. I’m 73 and was very deconditioned from surgeries, chemo and other medications. My focus, energy and stamina were very low. I was motivated to maintain remission and that was enough to get me involved in the program which was tailored to where I was physically and emotionally. The instructors are wonderful and very knowledgeable about the issues involved in cancer recovery. Since starting about 2 months ago, I now work out with 2-3 pound ankle weights and hand weights. I have also incorporated the exercises at home so that I exercise about 5 times a week. That is a miracle! Maintaining health and remission takes work and commitment because the stakes are high. The staff here are very involved in long term sustained recovery. Our goals are the same. It is really a great program with great therapists."

Thank you for sharing your experience, Marianne! We are excited to continue to work with you in your journey to improved health.

This beautiful building is our new home! Thank you for supporting us through this transition so that we can be an even better resource for you in your healing journey. We are excited for all that this new space has to offer, including:

SAFETY: Our building is cleaned to medical-grade standards and there will no longer be exposure to others not wearing masks. Our mask guidelines remain in place. We will continue to use (and expand the use of) HEPA filters throughout the clinic.

COMFORT: An extra spacious and comfortable reception area.

SETTING: Serene location, adjacent to nicely wooded area. Incredible views from the gym and treatment room areas.

EXPANSION: We will have 4 total private treatment rooms (vs. 2 now). The new space will also enable us to add more therapists and offer expanded hours of service!

EASE OF ACCESS: Plenty of parking, no curbs to navigate. Very easy to locate, just off of Riverside Parkway.

NEAR INOVA: If you have related appointments at or near the hospital, this should make all of your visits more convenient.

(FUTURE) NEW SERVICES: With our extra space and freedom to use our space our way, it is our plan to add many adjunct services, some of which may include: lymphatic/oncology massage therapist, nutrition/dietitian services, wellness and healing services, and cancer exercise training. All coming soon!

Of these features, which one(s) are you the most excited for? Let us know in the comments!

The best way to lower your risk of chronic Lymphedema is to be aware of the signs, so that you can detect it early. Lymphedema is swelling anywhere in the body–but most commonly (and most obviously) in the limbs–due to of a “backlog” of fluid in the lymphatic vessels. It has numerous possible causes, but lymphedema risk can be increased with certain types of cancer treatment.

Any of the following could be cause for concern:

❌ Tingling feelings
❌ Heavy achy feelings
❌ Noticeable swelling (especially on one side vs. the other)
❌ A lack of flexibility in your hand, wrist, fingers or ankle (for lower or upper extremity).
And more...

Read the rest of the signs on our latest blog post here: https://oncrehabandwellness.com/cancer-rehab/how-to-lower-your-lymphedema-risk/

If you've recently experienced one or more of these symptoms- it is imperative that you seek out the assistance of a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT). To schedule an assessment with one of our CLT’s contact us today: https://oncrehabandwellness.com/contact-us/

We are excited to announce that Oncology Rehab & Wellness will be moving to a NEW nearby location in Lansdowne in February 2023!

Since the inception of Oncology Rehab and Wellness this has been a big dream of mine - to have our own clinic space, our own culture and our own community of wonderful staff and patients. While our current space has been 'home' for the past 9 years, we have looked for a space where we could include even more benefits for our patients.

Here are some of the features that we are most excited about:

Safety: Our building is cleaned to medical-grade standards (of course!) and our mask guidelines remain in place for all patients, visitors and staff. We will continue to use (and expand the use of) HEPA filters throughout the clinic.

Comfort: An extra spacious and comfortable reception room.

Setting: Serene location, adjacent to nice wooded area.

Expansion: We will have 4 total private treatment rooms (vs. 2 now). The new space will also enable us to add more therapists and offer expanded hours of service!

Ease of access: Plenty of parking, no curbs to navigate. Very easy to locate, just off of Riverside Parkway.

Near Inova Loudoun Hospital: If you have related appointments at or near the hospital, this should make all of your visits more convenient.

(Future) New services: With our extra space and freedom to use our space our way, it is our plan to add many adjunct services, some of which may include: lymphatic/oncology massage therapist, expand our nutrition/dietitian services, add wellness and healing services and cancer exercise trainers. Additionally we will be offering the use of our gym space and equipment after completing your rehab for your convenience for a nominal fee. All coming soon!

Our office will continue to provide the best care possible and accept the same insurance plans. I realize that change can be difficult but I hope to make the transition as smooth as possible. Our staff will be there to help and I have included a map showing our current address and new location below. I think you will be quite pleased with our new, more modern and very updated look!

We will begin scheduling appointments at our new location in February 2023. Exact date to be announced once construction is finalized and our new equipment arrives. We will put out a new announcement once we know definite start dates.

NOTE: If you are a current patient and have an upcoming appointment that will be at our new location, we will personally contact you so you don't miss it!

I look forward to seeing you again. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us by email or drop by the office.

Be on the lookout for an announcement for our OPEN HOUSE at our new location!

New Year… New Hope! Oncology Rehab and Wellness wishes you and yours a blessed New Year filled with healing and hope for the future.

Here are just a few stories of hope from our clients as they overcame their health battles and restored their bodies with the help of Oncology Rehab and Wellness this year:

“For more than three years, I could not wear normal shoes. My legs were swollen, and it was hard to walk. After a two-week visit to the clinic, I returned to normal life, and I can wear regular shoes.” - Tatiana

“Cheryl was such a support to me mentally as well as physically while recovering from cancer surgery. I was devastated by my lack of arm motion and I regained complete range under Cheryl’s care.” - Kristin

“Cheryl and Lida provided fantastic care. Treatment for the lymphedema related to my surgery was very successful with almost all of the swelling reduced. In addition to the treatment, I was taught how to keep the level of swelling down on my own. I would recommend this facility for anyone dealing with lymphedema.” - Cindi

Thank you to our awesome team of physical therapists for giving our clients the best possible experience! And thank you to our clients, for trusting us with their physical health.

Happy New Year!

Great news!!! LTA has been passed by Congress!!!

We did it! The LTA has been passed by Congress!!!

Today, the House passed the year-end omnibus legislative package that cleared the Senate yesterday and included the Lymphedema Treatment Act, which means our bill has officially been passed by Congress! President Biden is expected to sign the bill as soon as it reaches his desk, so in a very short time the Lymphedema Treatment Act will officially become law!!

Please take a moment to send an email to your members of Congress to express your appreciation for passage of the Lymphedema Treatment Act. https://www.votervoice.net/LTA/Campaigns/99504/Respond

This needs to pass before 12/31- or the process starts back from the beginning in 2023! 😓. Call your senators and let’s get this done!

We’re back on the Hill! Today we had a meeting with Congressman Buddy Carter to thank him for being a co-lead of the Lymphedema Treatment Act and getting passed in the House with overwhelming bipartisan support. He told us he has never received so much appreciation for a piece of legislation. He also said he will continue to do all he can to make sure the bill is passed into law this year! We need everyone reading this to do the same and call your Senators!

“An “ideal” diet is one that is individualistic and meets one’s particular nutritional needs and goals, whether that be managing side effects from treatment or maintaining a healthy diet post-treatment”.

There may not be a simple answer when it comes to the ideal diet for ovarian cancer, but Clinical Dietitian-Nutritionist Cara Anselmo of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has provided helpful answers to dietary questions posed by patients.
