JUST A GIRL & HER LOCS 🤎

Locs can be a great low-maintenance hairstyle for autistic individuals who may struggle with frequent hair grooming due to sensory sensitivities or executive functioning challenges. Here are some ways locs can be easier to maintain:

1. Less Frequent Manipulation

Unlike loose hair, locs don’t require daily detangling or styling, which can reduce sensory discomfort from brushing and combing.

2. Low-Stimulation Washing Routine

Depending on hair type and preference, locs can be washed every 1–2 weeks rather than daily, which can help those who find frequent washing overwhelming. Dry shampoo or scalp sprays can also help in between washes.

3. Protective and Long-Lasting

Once mature, locs require minimal styling, and protective styles like buns or ponytails can keep them neat for extended periods.

4. Retwisting and Maintenance Can Be Scheduled

For those who prefer structured routines, locs only require retwisting every few weeks to months, making it easier to plan haircare around sensory needs.

5. Customization for Comfort

Thicker locs (like freeform or semi-freeform) require less retwisting, while smaller locs (like micro locs) offer more styling versatility. Some people may prefer softer products with fewer scents to reduce sensory discomfort.

Summer is a time children often look forward to because it means a break from school for a few months. No strict schedules — no classes — no homework. But for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a change in daily routine can actually create new stressors. Children with ASD are often rigid and inflexible when it comes to change, and many do not like it when their schedules are altered. The tension these children experience can also increase the stress levels for the parents and other family members in the household. While no two individuals are alike, there are ways parents can possibly help ASD children transition more smoothly into summer.

Plan ahead
Use timers/alarms
Utilize Social Stories
Introduce Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS)
Allow for Extra Time
Take Small Steps
Introduce your child to new places or activities

Autsome Brushes wishes everyone a safe and happy summer 🫶🏽
